The Weakest Link
Advantages: people get their 15 minutes of fame
Disadvantages: anne robinson, tactical playing, same all the time, winnings
The weakest link is another quiz show which is hosted by Anne Robinson and is aired on BBC1 but was first shown on BBC2. This seems to be the case with BBC shows, they normally start on BBC3 and if any good progress to BBC1. As this show started in 2000 I don't think BBC3 was launched then.
The show features nine contestants in the beginning and the object of the game is to bank as much money as possible by answering questions in a row. These questions have to be answered consecutively by the contestants and any money won needs to be banked before they answer their question unless they get to £1000.
Player 1 answers correctly and gains £20, player 2 answers correctly the pot goes up to £50 and so on, if all 9 players answer correctly in a row without banking they can gain £1000 for that round and the round ends. If a player gets it wrong without banking then the pot earned goes back to £0 and they lose what they have earned already, if they get it wrong but have banked what the pot was up to then the money has gone to the bank and is safe and the pot starts at £0 once more. If a player shouts bank then the chain has to start again. Say they bank £400 and then they bank another £600 then the round will stop there as they have reached the £1000 limit for the round, they can carry on until the time runs out to aim to get as many right as possible.
Are you with me so far?
The first round starts at 3 minutes and then 10 seconds are knocked off each subsequent round.
After each round we then come to the why the show is called the Weakest Link. Each contestant has to judge who they think is the weakest at answering the questions correctly and then vote them off. The narrator tells us who the strongest and weakest player is statistically. In the first few rounds they probably do vote off the weakest but I have found in some cases that the strongest player has been voted off in order to give the other players a chance at the winnings. The player voted off has to do the 'walk of shame' as Anne Robinson says her catchphrase - you are the weakest link, Goodbye!
After seven rounds we are down to two players and they play the game as before but this time the money earned is tripled. Usually they try and answer a couple of questions and then bank it to be safe. As the rounds go on the questions get a bit harder. We are then into the final round. Each player is asked 5 questions in turn, the strongest player has the choice to go first or second. The one that answers the most questions wins all the money banked. If there is a tie then they are asked more questions until one gets one wrong and the other right.
Well the premise of the show is that there is a possibility of winning £10,000, £1000 each round and tripled on the last one but the reality of getting anywhere near that is near impossible. If they had a proper strategy and say banked every four or five questions they might actually get somewhere but without having hindsight of what the next question will be and the fact they want to keep the chain going it normally goes wrong and they end up back at nothing. Getting the question wrong without banking is the quickest way of getting booted off. I don't think I have seen anything over £4k being won so it's not the biggest winning pot around since Millionaire and Deal or no deal are on our screens, it doesn't have the greatest appeal that it used to. I think shows like this that have been on our screens for over 9 years become repetitive. I see shows like DOND where they add little changes here and there, and maybe that might revamp it a bit but I don't really sit and watch this daily as I used to a few years ago. Anne Robinson and her silly questions to try and embarrass the contestants are not as funny as it used to be and her stone-faced ways are getting quite boring. How many times can you listen to her telling someone they are useless! Telling them how pathetic they are at only banking £20 instead of getting £1000 that round.
OK so it's good for someone to have their 15 minutes of fame as only one person is going to win the measly pot and you know that most of them that go on there know full well that they will not get anywhere near the last rounds but on the other hand you see the egotistical ones that think they know it all and are completely shocked and upset that they have been voted off before the dumbo. This is what you call tactical voting matey!
The highest prize ever won was £5420 and the lowest has been just £750.
As with most shows they have their celebrity specials which are ok I suppose and they are for charity and Anne Robinson does her usual quick witted remarks about them so they are passable but for the rest of the shows I just find the same daft sayings and remarks boring now and it just needs revamping and livening up!
This show has done so well it is shown all over the world and like many quiz shows has many versions of video games and board games etc. But they can never match the real thing can they?
Summary: seek out the middle link, the one between the weakest and strongest
