The Weakest Link
Advantages: GREAT HOST.
Disadvantages: CAN BECOME A LITTLE BORING. SHOW GOES ON TOO LONG.
The weakest link is a bbc quiz show. This show allows nine contestants to answer general knowledge questions in order to accumalate a prize fund which can only be won by the winning contestant.
The show is hosted by the brilliant Anne Robinson, I do believe that without her, this show would not have taken off and become the global phenomenon it is today. Anne takes on the persona of harsh domineering woman. Her very presence on the centre podium, reduces the most hardest, butchest male into a quivering wreck.
Round by round the general knowledge questions get more difficult. There is a grid in the corner of the screen and for every question right the money grid increases. Throughout the round the contestants have the right to shout 'bank' which will save the amount that is already on the money grid. However if a question is answered incorrectly, without a pre shout of 'bank' then the prize fund goes back to zero. The main aim of the game though is to try and get a succesion of answers correct in order to climb the prize fund and reach the target cash prize.
At the end of each round each contestant has the opportunity to vote off another player. The player who gets the most votes, is deemed the weakest link and is sent off stage via the walk of shame.
The last two contestants remaining. Then battle it out, via a series of general knowledge questions. Whoever gets the most questions correct wins the total in the prize fund. Whoever looses goes home with nothing.
I truly love this show. I can not physically watch this programme without screaming at the television. It never fails to amaze me how many players forget to shout 'bank'!
The programme is on for an hour which does tend to get a little tedious after a while. However this is where the fabulous Anne Robinson steps up to the mark. Her constant put downs to the players are just cringeworthy but make for deliciously addictive tv. She is not afraid to speak her mind, which has led to some pretty harsh words from the host over the years. She is quick to critique the clothing and general appearnce of the players. Asking such questions such as ' So did you get dressed in the dark this morning?'
My nan always says that she finds it annoying that she is so rude to the contestants. But this is surely what makes the show so entertaining. I have no doubt that all this is an act and Anne Robinson is not a dragon in real life. She is just donning a pantomime villian persona for the sake of the show.
The popularity of this show, which was first aired in August 2000, has rocketed. Anne Robinson has become a global superstar. Here in the UK, the weakest link brand has sold millions of merchandise. From board games to t shirts. The shows popularity has also led to numerous celebrity editions of the game. Where celebrity players battle it out in order to find the strongest link. I tend to prefer the celebrity editions, as the celebs are not afraid to engage in some cheeky banter with Anne which leads to some laugh out loud moments.
The weakest link is certainly an excellent game show. It deserves all the credit it has gained over the years. The show has a very basic, uncomplicated format which I think adds to its appeal. Its easy to get to grips with the rules and viewers find themselves becoming engaged in answering along to the questions.
If you have never seen the weakest link, then I strongly suggest you give it a try. It becomes compulssive viewing. I love it simply because Anne has the most fantastic put down lines in the history of game show hosts.
Summary: A BRILLIANT QUIZ SHOW. WITH AN EQUALLY BRILLIANT HOST.
