Advantages: Easy to follow format, big prize, lots of tension
Disadvantages: Been on for a long time and maybe needs a rest
When Who Want's To Be A Millionaire, presented by Chris Tarrant began back in September 1998, it was an instant success, eventually becoming a worldwide phenomenon.
The idea of the show is very easy for anybody to follow. Basically, to win the jackpot of £1,000,000, you have to answer all 15 questions correct.
To begin the game, there are 10 contestants who are asked a question with 4 answers that they need to put in sequential order. The contestant that gets the answers in the correct order the fastest gets to sit in the chair to play for £1,000,000.
Every time that an answer is answered correctly, a higher monetary total is the prize. The monetary order originally was £100, £200, £300, £500, £1,000, £2,000, £4,000, £8,000, £16,000, £32,000, £64,000, £125,000, £250,000, £500,000 and £1,000,000. If the contestant gets to £1,000 or £32,000, they are then guaranteed at least this prize, even if they get a question incorrect. The questions begin very easy and get progressively more difficult. All questions have 4 possible answers. To help, there are three lifelines that can be used once at any time. These are Ask The Audience (where the 100 members of the studio audience vote for what they think is the correct answer), 50/50 (where two random incorrect answers are removed) and Phone-A-Friend (where you can call somebody to see if they know the answer).
Chris Tarrant is in my opinion, a brilliant presenter for this programme. He certainly helps to build the tension up!
The programme has now been running for almost 11 years, which is a long time and maybe the show could do with a little rest. But, I'm sure that it will be a successful format for many years to come.
Summary: Great show that has been a worldwide success
