Advantages: improve general knowledge. good host, possibility to win a million
Disadvantages: lost its appeal, bit dated
I am sure most of you want to be a millionnaire and this is certainly one possible way of doing it especially if you have great general knowledge!
The show in the Uk is hosted by Chris Tarrant ( a former presenter on Captial fm radio show in London). The way in which you win the million is by answering 15 (or now 12) general knowledge multiple choice questions.
The show begins with a fastest finger first round. This is where contestants are given a question and 4 answers from the host and they have to put the answers in a particular order in the fastest time to get in the chair and have a chance to play for the million pound prize.
Once in the chair , Tarrant asks general knowledge questions with four possible answers labelled A,B,C and D. The questions as you would expect start off very easy and get harder and harder as the prize money increases. The player has three life lines which are ask the audience, phone a friend and 50/50. Ask the audience allows them to get the audience to vote on what they think is the correct answer and use this to make their choice. Phone a friend allows them to make a call to a friend to ask them if they know the answer to a question. 50/50 allows them to eliminate two wrong answers and leave the other remaining correct and incorrect anaswer to the question.
These are the two formats currently in use with prize money as follows:
Old (15 question format)
£100
£200
£300
£500
£1,000
£2,000

£1 million
The show has also been used in the success of the new hollywood hit film slumdog millionnaire where a boy from the slums in India goes on the Indian version of the show and aims to win the million.
Overall I think it is a good show. When it first came out it was a great success as it was soemthing quite new and innovative in the game show world but now it has become somewhat dated and I don't really watch the show much these days. Tarrant is a pretty good host, quite lively and gets the audience involved and develops the relationship with the player but the game is not as good as it was before and has certainly lost some of its earlier appeal. It can still help you to improve your general knowledge though.
Summary: good show but lost its appeal somewhat
