Advantages: You can play at home, good format.
Disadvantages: Chris Tarrant's annoying little trademark phrases.
Although everyone claims to hate the infamous Mr Tarrant for his trademark phrase "But we don't want to give you that!", his television quiz "Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire?" is actually quite good. For the people who manage to appear on the show (and a dubious source of mine said that someone wasn't allowed to appear because he was too clever), they have to put four events in chronological order to be in with a chance of playing for the money. Out of the people with the correct answers, the fastest one gets to play. Once the contestant gets in the seat, he/she has to answer 15 consecutive questions correct to win a million pounds. There are three lifelines that can be used once each - Phone A Friend, Ask the Audience and 50:50. The questions start off very easy then gradually become more difficult. Contestants can decide not to answer their next question at any time... but this means they leave with less money than they could make. And if they answer the question wrong... they leave with the guarenteed sum they earned... this could be £32,000 (not bad!) or as low as £1,000 (compared to a million pounds - bad.) The whole point of the show is for people at home to yell at their television sets going "It's C, you idiot!" or "Take the money! Take the money!" This sounds sad, but it actually happens. And I admit, I have been found guilty of doing this:) Recently, as I'm sure you all know, there was a big fuss when a woman called Judith Keppel won the top prize of a million pounds. Was it fixed? Well, that was the question everyone was asking. Is this a case of sour grapes perchance? Hmmm... A lot of people leave with respectable amounts of money like £64k - not a million pounds, but I'd be happy. Watch the show and I'm sure you'll be left wondering "Could I do that?" And that really is the show's appeal. Check it out.

- 27/12/00 My dubious source is just that:) It's a friend of a friend of a friend, so I'm not prepared to accept it as 100% accurate... Although you have to admit some of the contestants aren't especially bright (no offense if any of them get hold of this!). Any selection there? Hmmmm...:) |

- 25/12/00 Hmmm ! Interested in what your 'dubious source' had to say. Could there be any truth in that ? Although I am cynical (see my op), there have been some very clever people on, so I would doubt if there is any selection there. Food for thought though. Any more details would be interesting. |
