Advantages: Great show

Disadvantages: None really

The Wombles is an animated but not cartoon TV series made famous by its theme tune and by the connection it had with children as it was aired on our TVs. As a child, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it, and it also taught me to not litter.

The Wombles are rodent-like furry creatures in humanoid form that roam Wimbledon Common and pick up pieces of litter, using them to make things for themselves. The educational side of it is very clever, firstly teaching us that we shouldn't litter, but also showing us that although we may regard something as rubbish, it can be used to make something else, or as a practical thing. It makes use of the saying 'One man's rubbish is another man's treasure!' The litterbugs' rubbish was clearly treasured by the Wombles!

Chief Womble was Great Uncle Bulgaria, and he named the other Wombles after places on his map, such as Tobermory, Wellington, Orinoko and Tomsk. Each episode would have one of the Wombles either discovering something new or causing some kind of mischief. Every episode would show them making use of so-called 'rubbish' that they find by roaming Wimbledon Common and picking it up, and the theme tune indicates this: 'Making good use of the things that they find, things that the everyday folk leave behind!'

I loved this show when I was younger. They have recently revamped the show, introducing some newer characters and giving the front of the show a more modern look. It doesn't spoil it for me, and it probably makes it more enjoyable for kids these days, but I still prefer the magic of the older Wombles episodes, when they were Wombling free!

Summary: Wombles is a classic and was one of my favourite
