Advantages: Available on video these days, probably, Enough websites around to keep your memories alive
Disadvantages: Old series not on Telly any more, New series on Nick Junior at certain times
“Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we”, well, they’re also wombling on the internet these days, actually, their official site being: http://www.wombles.tv/pages/fmain.htm Remember that the Wombles, back in 1975 were way before their time – they recycled everything and made good use of the things that they found. Take a leaf out of the furry friends book folks and recycle! Anyway, back to the plot…. Apparently, in the old series (which folks of our generation will remember more clearly), there were a grand total of 60 episodes! This website gives an all-too brief synopsis of each episode to bring back those fond memories, just click on the “Old Series” icon. For those of you who are much younger, there has been a recent Wombles revival and another 52 futher episodes were made, though in my opinion none of these are even half as good as the original series. According to the website, they also made several quick “1 minute” time-filling episodes which have not yet been shown on UK TV, so watch out folks! You can even send the Wombles a picture or e-mail, should you be that way inclined, whether or not you get an environmentally friendly reply yet remains to be seen. You can also play Stepney’s tidying up game, which I’m sure you would all love to play – let me know your high scores!! You can also swot up on the background to the Wombles, and their creator, Elisabeth Beresford (Liza) who was born in Paris in 1928.The website continues; “ The Wombles of Wimbledon Common were inspired by a child's mispronunciation one Christmas, when Elisabeth took her children to Wimbledon Common for a Boxing Day stroll. Back home that same day, Elisabeth made out a list of Womble names. The characters developed along with their names... Great Uncle Bulgaria was based on her father-in-law, Tobermory resembled her brother (a skilled inventor), Orinoco her son
and Madame Cholet was based on her mother.” So, now you know! Finally on this site, you are able to view the characters’ pictures in the Wombles Gallery and quiz your mates on the names of the Wombles! All in all, the official site is fairly good, with 2 on-line games to play, but too much emphasis is placed on the new series of the Wombles, not the one we all know and love. Talking of the old series, the original title sequence can be downloaded and viewed in the usual Real-Player sort of way, from: http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/ilove/tv/titles/wombles. shtml That about sums it up, folks – apart from to say : “remember you’re a Womble”!
