Advantages: Some good topical debates
Disadvantages: Matthew Wright
I sometimes begin to watch this show when I'm stuck working at home and my brains on a bit of a go slow... a quick cup of coffee and a flick through the channels usually sorts the grey matter out...
This 90 minute chat show began it's life in 2000 as an everyday early morning chat show on channel 5 (and fiver) and is usually hosted by Matthew Wright (as in the title) but when he is on one of his many holidays there is a guest host which sits in his seat to take control of the panel...
It is shot in front of a studio audience with live phone-ins and e-mail communications from the general public.
The panel consists of three well known people, changing every so often, including Gail porter, Carol Thatcher, Dr David Bull, Martin Lewis, Aled Jones and many others... all having many comments on what ever subject was under discussion.
There is a women sat in a booth who handles the phone calls and sorts through the e-mail... it was a young woman called Korin Nolan until the middle of 2008 then her seat was eventually taken over by Amie Morris.
The show is a simple format which seems to be split into parts...
Firstly, the host chats with the panel of guest with a little banter thrown in.
Secondly, it is the dissection of the newspapers, discussing the news of the day in the morning papers...
Thirdly, The show talking point begin and the phone lines begin to buzz callers, but only a few calls are aired.
Then, usually for the last half hour it is the advice part where an 'expert' in something or other will give their advice on certain subjects.
* IN CONCLUSION
This is one of them shows that has something for everyone... regarding the issues covered on each episode.
The format is simple to understand and the discussions are well held especially when Mr Matthew Wright is on holiday and a professional guest host is in the chair...
The topics under discussion are sometimes very interesting indeed, especially the newspaper stories which the panel discuss in the beginning of he show, delving into some of the more bizarre topics of he media, sometimes with some real comical results... although there are also some more serious topics as well.
In all it is a good show to get your brain in gear as you shout abuse at the screen, ranting about the stupid comments being made, trying to get your voice heard even though deep down you know they can't hear you...
Personally, (bit of a rant here my friends)...although I feel the show can be somewhat entertaining I can only watch it for a few minutes when Wrighty is in the host chair as I find him to be one of the most arrogant people to ever host a show... considering he used to be a showbiz writer in one of the tackiest newspaper there is I wonder how this buffoon managed to swing this position...(or more like what position he had to hold to get this job.?)
I mean, anyone that slates a show without actually ever seeing it shouldn't be doing a reviewers job in the first place...( I refer to his slur over David Souls acting in The dead monkey in 1998)
He is rude to the general public when they phone the show, usually cutting them off if they disagree with his personal opinion. He also interrupts the panel way too much with his half baked attempt at humour...(the audience laugh in pure pity for him me thinks).
He seems to have a constant chip on his shoulder and enjoys nothing more than to talk down to people, especially those who are earning less than him, (which is most of the country considering his overpaid wages)... he also tends to be proud of the fact he doesn't have and doesn't like children, maybe its his way of coping with the fact he is either impotent or his swimmers are as slow as him...?, often belittling those that do have a family... (although todays children will probably be paying for his retirement).
Plus, this man really gets a thrill out of sneering at people who are not at work, for some reason or another... does this fool not realise that his audience, both in the studio and at home, are mainly not at work? Does he not realise that he is actually slating his own audience... the people that are his bread and butter at the end of the day... let's face it, no viewers, no rating, no Wright stuff....
If the producers could change the name and replace this obnoxious oaf with a real entertainer then this show could possibly reach other heights... maybe even channel four may be interested...(LOL).. But whilst this joker is hosting the show I do feel that it will always be an early morning time filler... a professional host should be more impartial and not be so rude, especially to the general public who watch his show....
But don't take my word for it, watch it yourself and make up your own mind about the show and the host...
Summary: A new host and a new name would lead to better rating

- 13/01/09 Wish the advice section at the end of the programme was longer seems like only 10 minutes for some topics and always so rushed. Good review. |
