Advantages: Where most titles change hands
Disadvantages: Highlights are shown anyway
1995, The WWF currently had 5 Pay Per Views, what are now known as "the classic five". Royal Rumble, King Of The Ring, SummerSlam, Survivor Series and the grand daddy of 'em all..WrestleMania. At this time Pay Per Views were really big events, with matches on the cards that were the climax of feuds that had been going on for months. Pay Per Views were must sees. Halfway through 1995, some bright spark in WCW decided to have a Pay Per View every month. Suprisingly, the fans were paying to see the events each month. WCW had struck gold...WWF now had no choicce but to follow, WCW was allready ahead in the TV ratings. WWF went from having five a year to 12 a year, 14 if you included the U.K events. WWF had no choice, the fans proved they would prove pay, so they had to step it up. At first, everything was looking rosy, great matches, great cards, and great money. Gradually, Pay Per Views got a little samey, WWF now had to act fast. So they devised the Hell In The Cell, Buried Alive, Boiler Room Brawl and Dungeon matches to regain interst in the Pay Per Views, they were sending the message that you would only see these matches if you paid for them. It worked, WWF PPV's were once again the HOT thing in Wrestling. Gradually, the creative department were running out of stipulation matches to add...buying rates for PPV's once again slumped, where could they go from here...? Shock, Violence and Sex were now what the WWF had resorted to to sell their PPV's. The "attitude" era was here.. Bikini Contests, Evening Gown matches, Striptease matches, Table matches, Ladder matches, Streetfights. Once again, WWF had gained interest in their PPV's, which is still going on to this day. Luckily for us, we do not have to pay for the events, if we did however would anyone really pay? Why bother to pay when the highlights are shown on Raw an
d Smackdown anyway? Something new is needed to keep Pay Per Views fresh, we should have no doubt that WWF will think of something. They've done it before...they can do it again...

- 20/04/02 Agreed, it seems for the last few years we've been watching the same people wrestle the same matches over and over again. 5 PPVs a year, allowed time to build fueds and gave you something to look forward to and stay up late for. Now I leave the tape running and watch it on fast forward, stopping only to freeze frame Trish :D |
