This American sitcom called 'Everybody loves Raymond' is up there with 'Friends' for me. The series aired from 1996 - 2005 in America but is still shown today on Comedy Central on Sky. Channel 4 have also shown this series for many years, mostly in the morning time. For those of you who are not familiar with this series I will give you a summary of what to expect from the show.
The central character is a middle aged man called Raymond who on the surface has a perfect life living in a lovely rural area of New Jersey. He has a pretty wife called Debra and they have 3 young children. In this series, series 1, the daughter is about 4 and the twin boys are about 1 or 2 but by the end of the whole series (series 8) the children are about 10 years older. The actors are the same throughout the whole series which can be unusual for child actors. Ray is a Sports Journalist and is very successful within his career.
The main comedy thread in the series is the fact that Ray's parents live right across the street from them and both parents really are characters themselves and cause the most hilarious situations to arise. Ray's father, Frank, is slightly brash, vulgar and lazy although remains loveable at the same time. Ray's mother, Marie, is the most interfering woman and is so direct in how she speaks to Debra that she comes across as very rude most of the time but provides some great comedy. Ray also has a brother called Robert who feels that due to his parents idolising Ray he himself is completely overlooked by his parents.
The situations that arise out of everyday life are covered in this series. Most of the scenes covered in the show take place in the family home and they take very simple scenarios around the home and turn them into farcical situations mostly with Ray showing how immature and senseless he can be. Although Ray is successful in his career he leaves a lot to be desired in his attitude in his home life. He is just a bit useless! Debra puts up with a lot from him and his parents but deep down there is a true strength of love between the married couple.
The show has won countless Emmy Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards over the years proving its success and popularity.
In this DVD of Series 1 there are 22 episodes including the very first pilot of the show (in which the twins have different names in this single episode which is a little bit strange!). There are 3 DVD's in this box covering all 22 episodes with each episode lasting about 22 minutes. This DVD is available to buy from Amazon for £15 but I think you'd be able to get it cheaper from sites like Ebay.
