Gossip Girl - Complete Season 1 (DVD)
Date: 31/01/13, updated on 05/02/13 (32 review reads)
Advantages: Excellent show
Disadvantages: Only 18 episodes this series
I first came across gossip girl whilst looking through the tv channels for something to watch. I had seen it advertised but never watched it before. From the first episode I saw I was hooked.
Gossip girl is based on a book of the same name by Cecily Von Ziegasar. The pilot is almost identical to the first book but after that they don't follow the same storylines. Gossip Girl first aired in the US in September 2007 and the UK was always shown it a matter of weeks after.
Gossip girl is a blogger who posts tips sent in from the people of Manhattan. Most of her tips focus on the main characters.
Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester): the queen bee whos relationships with boys and her best friend S are often posted on GG. B craves attention in the Upper East Side and is always presenting herself in a sophisticated way (as her fave actor Audrey Hepburn would). She is sarcastic and witty and an expert manipulator. With the help of her on off boyfriend Chuck they can take down anyone, even their BFFs.
Serena Van Der Woodsen (Blake Lively): the it girl and wild child S left for boarding school in Connecticut leaving secrets a plenty. Now she's back, rekindling friends is harder than it looks, especially when it's B. Will she ever change?
Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick): Cs up to his old games with whoever he can. Watch out J. He is very much like B and when together she is the only person to see his softer more vulnerable side.
Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford): N is best friends with C and is torn between which girlfriend to choose. He is often caught up in his families problems.
Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgely): D is the outsider who so desperately wants in. He has a lifelong crush on S and loves to write. He lives in Brooklyn with his father and sister, somewhere no Upper East Sider would ever visit.
The first series focuses a lot on their life at school and the cliques they are part of. B is often hangs out on the Steps to the Met with her minions as she has decided that the top step is for her, the important one, and all her friends sit lower down. All of the main characters attend exclusive private schools, Constance Billards for Girls and St Judes for Boys, and although they are at same sex schools they are right next to each other and often integrate for assemblies or break times. This can cause trouble.
This show is full of scandal, relationships, and elite teenagers as they attend school and home with an addition of rich wealthy events only they could attend.
This show often films in New York City which gives it an impressive look. I am now desperate to go and see NYC for myself.
Some bonus features on the DVD are:
The beginning: how the GG tv show began.
GG couture: the influence GG has had on fashion choices and what characters would wear.
A GG wedding: how the big day was made.
LOL gag reel: my fave bonus feature, hilarious.
I bought this for £18 a few years ago but it's probably cheaper now. It includes all 18 episodes of the first series.
You will not regret buying this DVD. I have watched it so many times, I'm surprised it still works!
