Kendra - The Complete First Season (DVD)
Advantages: Funny, light hearted, good for those who enjoyed Girls Next Door
Disadvantages: Is she that ditzy?! Her laugh. The theme tune.
This review will be about the show "Kendra", not any specific series.
When Kendra Wilkinson moved out of the Playboy Mansion, everyone especially her mother, wondered and worried about how she would cope. From living with her mum at 18 to moving in to a mansion with butlers, chefs and cleaners, Kendra never really had to do much for herself. This was obvious if you ever walked foot in her room - an absolute state! But she'd be the first to admit that.
The Girls Next Door is the show that gave Kendra her career and Hugh Hefner is the man she should thank. She was a "painted lady" (no clothes - just body paint on) at one of his birthday parties. They met, got on well and she was introduced to Bridget and Holly and invited to come and be Hef's third girlfriend at the mansion.
A big decision for any girl of 18, but Kendra's pretty wild, so jumped at the chance. In a strange way you can't really blame her.
I think it's pretty obvious to any watcher that Kendra wasn't physically attracted to Hef (I haven't heard any stories of her saying that, it's purely my opinion), but also obvious that they had a great deal of love for one another.
After surviving a good 5 years at the mansion, Kendra and the other girls decided to leave the mansion and go their separate ways.
So what was Kendra meant to do now? Her whole career was centred on the fact she was Hugh Hefner's girlfriend.
Kendra moved out of the mansion, into a lovely home, that she and Hef called "the mini mansion" as she even had her own pool.
The first couple of episodes of Kendra show her moving in and it would be an understatement to say she was unprepared! She didn't have a clue what she was doing! This girl had never cooked, cleaned or ever done food shopping for herself - well she certainly needed to learn now. With help from her family and other Playboy Bunny friends along the way, she was growing up. There are loads of funny parts along the way, they really like to play on the fact that she is clueless, but she must be doing something right!
Pretty early on in the series, Kendra introduced her new fiancée, Hank Basket, a famous basketball player and says that he will be moving in. That was quick! This must been pretty soon after she moved out of the mansion, but they don't mention dates or anything. This show does starts off on her first day in her new home though.
The series follows Kendra and Hank through their weddings plans and right up until the day itself. Hef actually invites them both over and offers to let them have the wedding and evening do at the mansion, which of course they say yes to. Very generous and Hef sees it as a bit of an honour, seeing as only one wedding has ever been held there and it was his own! At Kendra's "wedding shower" she also announces that she is pregnant.
Although there sounds like there are a lot of big dramatic moments in this show, they still keep it light hearted, in the same vain as Girls Next Door. You should give this a watch, even if Kendra annoys you (go on, admit it!) because it's so entertaining, even if sometimes in a cringe worthy way.
It doesn't take itself seriously, so you shouldn't either. It's a bit of fun that passes the time and I guarantee you will be hooked!
One thing that does annoy me about this show is the theme tune, it's awful. You see the episode where it was recorded, and they all look pretty pleased with it - they even play it at the party after their wedding! Written and recorded by Too Short (a rapper and friend of Kendra's). It does get stuck in your head and you can learn it after one listen - but it's pretty poor in my opinion! On the up side, it is catchy (let's also ignore the fact, I have used it as my review title!).
The guys will like watching it, for two very obvious reasons ;-) and the girls probably like her, because she is being herself, however loud that may be. We see Kendra throw her first dinner party, house warming party and more tricky issues like meeting Hanks parents and firing her personal assistant (who is also her brother's girlfriend). You will also see people from Girls Next Door appearing. Holly, Bridget, Hef and even Mary (Hef's secretary) and one of the chefs from the mansion.
Kendra and Hank in real life have just had a baby boy, so I think the next series will be interesting to see how things change.
You can catch the repeats of this on channel E!, or you can buy it on DVD, although I think it's only released on Region One.
Summary: Easy & fun to watch, not hard to follow, just a bit of sillyness
