Any parent who regularly has CBeebies on in their home is likely to already be familiar with the Octonauts, an animated series showing the adventures of a group of underwater explorers and rescuers.
For those who are not familiar with it, the main characters are a bear (Captain Barnacles), a cat (Kwazi) and a medic penguin (Peso), along with other slightly less prominent team members. They are based inside a big orange 'Octopod' under water and research different species of under water creatures and help underwater creatures in need. They also have several underwater vehicles to travel around in.
This series seems to really appeal to children of around the 2-4 age group, especially boys. Both of my boys aged 3 and 2 really enjoy this programme, and come running if they hear the theme tune starting.
The DVD contains 8 episodes, which if your child does watch Octonauts on Cbeebies they will have already seen. It is not new content it is just episodes from the first series. However if your child is a real fan of Octonauts then it is good to have so they can watch whenever they want, if you don't want to fill up all the space on your V+ or Skybox by keeping all the children's series stored on there. They are just over 10 mins long per episode.
There is also a special feature of "Creature Reports" on the dvd which is something not shown on Cbeebies, so that is a little extra for buying the dvd. I find the creature reports quite educational as it teaches about the underwater animals that you encounter in the show. Even though the programme is a children's adventure and does not really come across as realistic, the creatures which the Octonauts encounter do actually exist and are based on reality. They are not normally very well known creatures so personally when I first saw the series, and heard them mentioning animals such as "Whale-shark" I was not sure if they had made it up! So even adults can learn something.
The Octonauts is quite fast paced and with more action than a lot of other programmes or dvds aimed at this age group, and the colours and animations are very nice to look at (I find the characters quite cute especially the 3 main ones) so I feel it is one of the best things out there for this age group at the moment.
My two have watched this a lot and enjoyed it. Depending on his mood my 3 year old can find it scary at times even though he enjoys it, so then he wants me to watch with him - although this is not all the time only if he is feeling more sensitive or a bit anxious on that particular day. My 2 year old hasn't found it scary at all as he is not too easily scared.
I would say this is worth having if your child is a big fan of the Octonauts, but bear in mind it is the same episodes which they will have already seen on Cbeebies. I have given it 4 stars because you could really just record it from tv and get the same thing without any expense, but it is more convenient to have on dvd and is a great series.
