Prison Break - Season 2 Part 1 (DVD)

Date: 07/09/09

Rating:

Advantages: Lots of action, adventure, twists, great characters

Disadvantages: None!

Prison Break Season 2 is even better than Season 1. It has more action and adventure, more drama, and more variety.
Please note - This review will be based on the assumption that you watched Season 1, or at least that you don't mind finding out what the result of Season 1 was. I think it's probably pretty obvious, but if you are half-way through Season 1 and are scared I may give something away, stop reading now!

********** The Storyline **********

I think the headline of Season 1 'Escape is only the beginning' probably gives away the end of Season 1, and in any case I think it was pretty obvious as you surely can't make more than one series about a bunch of prisoners constantly trying to escape from prison...it could wear thin after a while!
So Season 2 begins as the prisoners have just escaped Fox River, lead by the main character Michael, played by Wentworth Miller. Escaping from prison really was the beginning as they face the huge challenge of disappearing completely and avoiding being caught by the police. Just to make life even more difficult for Michael and his brother Lincoln, they have a team of corrupt government bodies hot on their trail, keen to distinguish any evidence of the twisted scheme they had put together which was supposed to result in the death of Lincoln Burrows, and they want no trace left of their doings. Clearly it has become a lot more complicated as more and more people have become aware of what they are responsible for.

********** The Tone **********

This season is absolutely action-packed, crammed full of adventure, twists, fight scenes and drama. Some people may have got a little frustrated by the end of Season 1 with the whole season being based in prison. For those of you who felt this, you should definitely give Season 2 a chance as I think it will give you what you may have found was missing in Season 1. After all there is only so much that can happen in prison - now there's a huge playground for the drama and action to take place and this landscape has opened up so much more opportunity. There are also a number of new characters introduced which is exciting and for the existing characters, having the world outside to interact with helps us to see other sides of them.

********** The Characters **********

I absolutely love the characters in Prison Break. I think they clearly chose the actors very carefully and have chosen characters and actors full of personality and individual character. They are all so varied as well that it makes a really interesting watch, and you do find yourself growing attached to the characters. Here's my take on them:

Michael (Wentworth Miller) - Michael is the brains behind the operation. Normally calm, considered and capable, we do get to see a slightly more emotional and uncontrolled side to him in this season. We see that he does sometimes lose his cool too and does sometimes have to bend the law more than he would like to.

Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) - Michael's brother, the whole reason for the escape plot. I watched Season 2 again recently and grew to find Linc quite funny as a character the second time round. He is just so aloof and laid-back, he reacts to almost nothing and always seems not really to care about anything, apart from his son of course. Of course there is a more sensitive side to him that we see through his interactions with his son and with his (ex)-girlfriend Veronica.

Sucre (Amaury Nolasco) - somewhat of a comedy character, Sucre is a bit like a labrador - a lovely harmless, kind type but not the brightest spark. He constantly seems to panic and is so passionate about his girlfriend Marie-Cruz that everything he does is motivated by her.

T-Bag (Robert Knepper) - a total animal and probably the only convict of the bunch who is essentially evil and doesn't have an excuse for the bad things he has done. After all they can't all be innocent criminals who have been locked up for the wrong reason! T-Bag is a total animal and a lot of the violence in the season comes from him. The actor who plays him does a fantastic job and totally becomes the character - in fact you totally forget that there is a normal, nice guy behind this character.

C-Note (Benjamin Miles) - probably the character I have least to say about as his character is fairly quiet and subtle but still a clever and likeable character. Again, everything he does is motivated by his wife and child and all he wants in the world is to be reunited with them.

Sara Tancredy (Sarah Wayne Callies) - Sara is Michael's love interest. While in the first season she seems very quiet and introverted, in the second season we find out a lot more about her and her troubled past, and see a lot of her passion and strength come to the surface.

There are so many other great characters that I can't name them all. Brad Bellick continues to be the comedy nasty prison officer, while Mahone is a new key character on the trail of Linc and Michael, offering a new type of 'bad' to the equation.

********** Basics **********

There are 22 1-hour episodes making up the whole season (so obviously 11 making up the first part), and the whole season can be bought for around £50 - potentially less for a second-hand copy or if you look hard enough, or the first part on its' own for around £25. You could alternatively rent it from Blockbusters for around £6 a week if you think you can watch it quickly!

********** Conclusion **********

One of my favourite series' ever, I enjoyed this potentially even more than 24 which is another one of my favourites. I would recommend it strongly to anyone but would suggest that you watch Season 1 first.

Summary: A fantastic series, even better than series 1 and more action-packed
