Season Six starts where Season Five ended with Clark trapped in The Phantom Zone, the Kryptonian prison where all of the universe's worst villains are sent, and Lex possessed by the spirit of Zod and eager to decimate the earth! With time running out not just for his friends but for all humanity, Clark must discover a means of escape and prevent Zod from succeeding in creating his new world order!!
You will be pleased to know this doesn't take long and Clark is soon back in Smallville doing what he does best. But there is a problem......when Clark bust out of The Phantom Zone, so did many of the criminals imprisoned there and they are all equally determined not just to cause mayhem but also to be the first to kill The Last Son Of Krypton!!!
Things are really starting to get complicated now......especially with Lex starting to make his moves on Lana. Will she be able to resist his charms? And can Clark round up all of The Phantom Zone escapees? And what exactly is Lionel up to and can he be trusted? All these questions and more will be answered as Smallville hots up for it's best season yet!
This is the season that sees the introduction of The Green Arrow and first entertains the possibility that there is more than just friction between Clark and Lois! It is also the season where we are introducded to The Martian Manhunter and see the germination of The Justice League beginning to sprout. There are even revelations in store for Chloe....and ones that will have massive repercussions for her future!
I loved this season and think it is one of the best yet. Oliver Queen is a great character and my only regret is that he does not appear in here more as a foil for Clark and his boy-scout ideals. The scenes between him and Clark are refreshing and provide a lot of tension between the two characters as they face off over their different approaches to crime-fighting! But it is not just Green Arrow, other heroes from the Dc universe find themselves getting a bigger role and some of them we have seen before....
Smallville is a great series that is going from strength to strength the more it involves itself with established Superman history. Certainly about now, the show is literally brimming over with references and events that Superman and DC Comics fans will instantly recognise! With every new episode, the show becomes less a teen drama about a young Superhero growing up and finding his way into his powers and more about establishing the character Clark will become and setting his future destiny in place. As with other seasons, it is important to know that this is an alternative version of the Superman story we have all grown up and loved and so things that happen now strongly reflect events fans might expect instead later in Clarke's career! This does not dampen any enthusiasm I have for the show though, as it is the little things that fans recognise from the comics and other media that help make this such a success!
Extras here include a few deleted scenes and slightly lower budget special web-only episodes to do with Green Arrow but these are pretty much inconsequential and do not amount to much! For me, they add little to the DVD boxset and are of no real concern. Instead fans would be wise to focus on the other content here: anopther 22 episodes of classic Smallville adventure!
