Advantages: None of the nonsene that we had to endure in the original show

Disadvantages: Sometimes it had a soap opera vibe

I was brought up on the original series of Star Trek. I loved it. So I was a little dubious when Star Trek The Next Generation came along. But whatever doubts I had disappeared the moment the pilot episode kicked in. It was a very different world. No longer were the crew of the Enterprise really charting a new frontier - they were actually very comfortable and aware of their surroundings now. Not that things were boring but it did get rid of some of the more rubbish concepts in the original series - Kirk and the gang land on a world run by people obsesessed with a book on the Roman Empire... or whatever. Now the show had more drama in it and interaction of characters. Were Riker and Troy going to get back together? Did Tasha Yar have a crush on Picard? Not the old... Will Kirk's alien girlfriend be green this week? In hindsight, the first two seasons are a terrible durge to drag through... but then the show becomes phenomenal. Can we ever forget such classics as "The Best of Both Worlds"... or any episode Q was in? A classic show that deserves a rewatch

Summary: A worthy successor to the original series
