This volume of two episodes is taken from series 1 of classic Star Trek. Consisting of two contrasting episodes the one common theme is that Spock is really the central members of crew in the preceedings of both episodes. This side of paradise sees the enterprise visit a federation controlled planet where the inhabitants seem to almost live in a state of utopia. Spock soon discovers this secret is down to a strange form of plant life whose spores cause him to loose inhibitions and we see him as an almost unhinged human would come across. Volume thirteen collects two more memorable episodes from the first season of Star Trek, both being products of what was perhaps the most consistently high quality creative period in the show's history. The writing standard didn't necessarily slip as the show moved into its second season, but many of the plot styles introduced and expanded on so memorably here would see much re-use in the years to come, even beyond the original series' end. The photo of the late James "Scotty" Doohan on this basic DVD is as arbitrary and misleading as the rest of them, as the character hardly features at all in these predominantly Kirk/Spock entanglements.
