Now here is a series that you can sink your teeth (or fangs) into. I first discovered Supernatural after browsing for cheap boxsets on Amazon as I do lurve a good boxset. I read the blurb and bought this first season for just under ten big ones and I haven't looked back. I sat down with my housemate who hates anything 'supernatural' and watched the first episode.... huge mistake as we were both supposed to be studying. We were hooked and had to watch to the end of the first disk at least. I naturally loved it as the series is very much 'my thing' and he loved it too despite his prejudice about anything unreal. "OK OK so we get that it's good, what is it and what does it do?" I'm glad you asked...

Supernatural is the story of two brothers who also happen to be 'hunters'. Now you're not going to see any moose heads on display in this series NO. We're talking about everything that scared you as a child from ghosts to vampires to demons. On the surface this sounds cheesy but the presentation and delivery of the series makes you think otherwise.

The show is set in pretty much present day America (2005 in the case of the first series). Pretty sure the show is filmed in Canada but I could be completely wrong and have those two mixed up, I digress. The characters are of course attractive manly men as you would expect from a series such as this. Would be awkward if we had big bang theory-esque characters hunting down nasties. Despite being brothers, the two are actually very different and this works well for the show. Sam is the 'geeky' one who attends college and Dean is the cool one who sweet talks the girls and drives the finest black Chevy Impala you've ever seen. As the series starts the two aren't actually a team so to speak but it works out that way by the end of the first episode. This is a recurring theme throughout the series, whether the two can work out their differences for the greater good.

Despite being deep in terms of character development, each episode plays out like a mini horror movie. The writers borrow heavily from urban myths, legends and famous stories. These are things like ghostly women who appear on a highway and kill men by seducing them in their cars, scarecrows coming to life etc. It's really a great series for classic horror fans. I like this format in the first season as it means you don't miss out on too much if you miss an episode, not that you would since you'll have the boxset.

The 'main' story if you like is that they boys have teamed up to find their dad who's gone intentionally AWOL (oxymorons are my favourite). When Sam and Dean were very young, their mother was killed by something which is what led their dad, John to become a hunter and in turn train Sam and Dean to be hunters too. The family bond is given great importance throughout the series and this is especially true in this first season where every little hint of their Dad's location sends the brothers frantically into dangerous situations desperately looking for John.

I can't speak highly enough of Supernatural, it has everything that in my opinion makes a great series. The characters are all well developed, has it's own evolving mythology (vampires are killed differently here than the 'classic' garlic and a stake through the heart), enough excitement to have you shouting at the screen and enough sentimental moments to make you care about what happens to the characters. I wouldn't say that this is the best season of supernatural but it is essential and you will find the following seasons far more rewarding after watching it.

I hope you enjoyed my humble review, I'm not an expert on reviewing TV series but I've given it a shot! Advise me in the comments if there's something I can do better in future reviews. Stay cool.

Summary: Vampires, Demons and ... Wendigos?
