Whilst in a book shop I saw two books I wanted as part of a three for two. I never like to waste an offer so I had to find another book. LA Candy by Lauren Conrad caught my eye with the sweet on the cover (I often judge a book by its cover!) and after reading the back I decided to choose it as my third book.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and so last year I read the following two books. After reading all the books in the trilogy I was intrigued to know how similar the books were to her life.
I watched an episode of the hills which was being repeated on MTV and although I convinced myself I wouldn't like it and I would just watch the first few episodes, I got hooked on watching The Hills. I ended up watching every episode of every season and I am now thinking of watching the spin offs (The City, Audrina and Laguna Beach) But anyway, back to season 1.
The Hills is an American reality show following the lives of four girls in Los Angeles. It first aired on the 31st May 2006 in the US and Entertainment Weekly put it at number 82 of there 100 best shows of the last 25 years. The girls are followed as they go to work, school, at their apartments or anywhere else they go to in LA.
Main members of The Hills are:
Lauren Conrad: Lauren is the narrator of the show and is a big part of the hills. She moves to LA with her friend Heidi to attend fashion school and work towards getting a career in fashion. She has an internship at Teen Vogue.
Heidi Montag: Heidi is Lauren's best friend and she moves to LA with her where they share an apartment. She often has disagreements with Lauren over her boyfriend Spencer. She works at an event company after her miserable attempt at school.
Audrina Patridge: Audrina is Lauren and Heidi's friend and works at a record label. We rarely see her working and usually see her whilst socialising with her friends.
Whitney Port: Whitney works with Lauren as an intern at Teen Vogue. She is a main cast member although we don't see her out of Teen Vogue very often.
This show quickly became a favorite of mine and although I started off knowing absolutely nothing about fashion designers, I now know loads about them without even trying. Fashion is a main part of the show but there is plenty else if you do not like that type of programme.
After the last episode of series 6 I was confused about whether what I had been watching was actually real but I found a quote on the internet that reassured me it was real and the only fake was Kristen as she said to People magazine "I would never put my close friends or a real relationship on a show." She should never have gone on the show in the first place then, she clearly just wanted the money.
'Staring at the blank page before you...open up the dirty window....'
As the opening bars to Natasha Beddingfield's 'Unwritten' are blaring out the TV, I start singling along loudly (and very badly I might add). Yes that's right, it's The Hills Time!
For anyone who watched Laguna Beach (the real OC), the Hills is following Lauren Conrad on from the last episode of the series 2 where we see her getting in to her car and driving off to her new apartment in LA.
For those who have never seen Laguna Beach I'll do a quick recap for you. Its premise was to be the 'Real OC' (As in the American hit TV show about a group of rich kids who lived in Orange county) and was a reality style show following the lives, and loves , of a group of rich teenagers in their senior year at high school in Laguna Beach.
Season 2 of Laguna Beach Lauren decide to move to LA and attend fashion school there, after an unsuccessful attempt to go to school in San Francisco.
Despite all the references I have made to Laguna Beach, you don't have to have watched any of it's two series to get into the Hills at all. I can say this with one hundred percent certainty as I had never seen Laguna Beach myself until recently after I had finished all 6 series of the Hills and wanted a fix of something similar.
Episode 1 shows Lauren , who as I have already said was driving from her home town to her new apartment in LA, meeting up with her friend and new room-mate Heidi. These two are best friends and are the two main characters to appear in the show.
The Hills charts Lauren and Heidi's new life in LA, the cameras following them everywhere from Work to Home to the latest LA clubs. Lauren is going to fashion school as well as working as an Intern at Teen Vogue. Here at Teen vogue she meets Whitney, who is also an intern and will end up becoming one of Laurens best friends and a regular on the show herself.
Heidi meanwhile doesn't last at school for longer than an episode or two and ends up leaving to get a job at an Event organising company , which is her dream job.
The show is easy to watch, fun and gives you a great insight into the sometimes glamorous life of the two girls. We get to almost feel apart of the fun social scene of LA and we get to drool over the fashion, in particular THAT chanel bag!!
However one of my favourite things about the show is that they come across as very real characters, we get to see them at home in their apartment in their pyjamas discussing boys and love.
They are both incredibly likeable characters and it is easy to get addicted to see what happens to them and how the season will unfold.
Don't expect any major action or drama,(well it depends what you class as drama lol) this is no 24, but it is incredibly enjoyable and a great girly watch.
I won't give anything else away about what goes on in the series as if you are interested you should watch it yourself to find out!!
I used to just flick onto The Hills if I seen it on t.v, I always thought it was great, but the past year I have definitely become addicted!
The first season of the hills is focused on the main character, Lauren Condrad (as are the first five seasons). It carries on from Laguna Beach (The Real OC) which Lauren starred in. Now this season shows us Lauren leaving home to live in the Hollywood hills with her best friend Heidi Montag. They have both decided to join the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in L.A. It is a reality series with the majority of it real life (some scenes added for entertainment purposes - which always seems to come with American T.V). This series also shows the introduction of Audrina and Whitney.
The Hills first season has three discs, all full of drama -
Disc 1 - Episodes 1-5
Shows Lauren getting a great internship wth Teen Vogue (along with Whitney). Heidi starts to get bored with FIDM and a dream job opportunity comes along. Lauren's ex Jason Comes back onto the scene.
Disc 2 - Episodes 6-10
Heidi and her boyfriend Jordan experience problems when her job requires alot of attention. Lauren and Heidi's first New Year in L.A. Lauren and Jason decide to get a summer beach house together, Lauren sacrifices opportunities in work because of this.
Disc 3 - Special Features (Deleted Scenes, Interviews, Featurettes)
I always think these discs also show a lot of the comedy and show you more of who the stars are and deffo worthwhile watching unlike some Special Feature discs.
I would definitely reccommend this to anyone who in interested in Fashion, L.A, drama, real life, comedy, romance, independence etc. It covers so many areas and shows an insight to a completely different lifestyle. Perfect to watch with a glass of wine. The seasons only get better after this one, but this is a great starting point. I really don't know who would love this, if youlike anything from the categories above, give it a try.
Grazia - 'Sexy, spiteful and seriously addictive'
Rated - PG
Running Time - Approx. 206mins
I got mine as a gift from my partner, that was bought off Amazon. I would reccommend you to look around for prices especially for postage discounts.. Usually around £8-£10 for the first series. Buying the box set is sometimes LOADS cheaper. Always be careful to which region your buying - Region 2 is UK and Europe. I think it's usually as cheap to buy it new.
The Hills follows Lauren Conrad as she moves up to the Hollywood Hills to pursue a new life away from Laguna Beach. It's a reality television show that is real but producers have admitted to setting the scene, or as MTV like to call it, "scenes are created for dramatic effect." I do believe most of the emotions and the goings on are real and the feelings are true. I think what they mean by that is sometimes they have them sitting eating at tables and that obviously needs a bit of setting up and the conversations they have are perhaps prompted to see what they feel about things.
MTV prompt them to start a discussion about the various boys, work troubles, relationships in their lives.
Lauren Conrad is often referred to as LC. She, in my opinion is quite a pretty, nice mannered girl, if somewhat spoilt. She has the clothes, looks, long blond hair and drives a very nice convertible car. I do like her and I think she is quite entertaining. She often seems to have a rough ride where some of her friends are concerned but that is life, and more importantly that is life in Southern California.
The first season of The Hills premiered on May 31, 2006 and concluded on August 2, 2006. It is now out on DVD. The first season consists of 10 episodes, each approximately half an hour long.
In the first season, Like I've said above we see Lauren move up to Los Angeles with her best friend of the moment Heidi Montag. Heidi is enjoying partying and going out and is not too focused on school and this starts to cause tension between her and Lauren. Lauren is quite a focused girl and she balances classes at a fashion institute with her job as an intern as Teen Vogue. Apparently she got this job on her own merit and not specifically for the show. As Lauren wants to get into fashion this is a great start for her and one that opens many doors. It's interesting to see how she began as now she has moved on and is quite successful in that field and it's fun to see her as quite an innocent, inexperienced intern
Her friend from Teen Vogue is a girl called Whitney Port, they get on well and she to me seems the most well adjusted girl on the show, quite focused on her career and willing to take steps to move forward in her life. She took an internship in Paris for Teen Vogue, some of which was shown on the show.
Lauren makes friends with another girl called Audrina Patridge and she is featured in this season quite a bit.
Heidi Montag starts off this series looking quite plain and normal and not very Hollywood at all. She is pretty but as the years go on she has a make over and in my opinion looks quite plastic and unnatural which is a shame. In this series like I've said above she gets into partying and drops out of school to work for an events company called Bolthouse productions.
Boys, as ever in this show seem to be a hot topic of conversation and in my opinion cause the girls nothing but trouble. Lauren gets back together with her boyfriend Jason from Laguna Beach and in the final episode ahs to make a choice between spending the summer with him or an internship with Teen Vogue in Paris. I know which one I would choose in a heartbeat but then matters of the heart are never simple are they?!! Heidi's relationship with her boyfriend Jordan is also featured in this series before the terrible Spencer makes his appearance on the scene!
You can purchase the DVD box set for under £10 from Amazon.
