      Disadvantages

One of the best family sitcoms ever. Highly recommended.

THE NANNY is an American Sitcom that ran for 6 seasons, between 1993 and 1999.

It was conceived by Fran Drescher who got inspiration for the title character while in England visiting her friend Twiggy (yes, that Twiggy).
The series was produced by Drescher and her then-husband Peter Marc Jacobson.

The series is about Fran, a working class Jewish woman who becomes the nanny of 3 wealthy children, whose father is an English theatrical producer called Maxwell Sheffield.
Despite the culture clash, the family become very attached to this loud, colourful character.
Fran also gets along very well with Niles, the butler.
On the other hand, Maxwell's partner at his production company, C.C. Babcock, hates the fact that this attractive new woman is around, since she is infatuated with Maxwell herself.
She and Niles, the butler, are always at each other throats (metaphorically speaking).

Added to these main characters are Fran's perennially hungry mother Sylvia, semi-senile grandmother Yetta, and ditzy best friend Val.

This is one of my favourite sitcoms ever. Not every storyline works, but those that do are absolutely hilarious.

      Fran Fine - Fran Drescher
      Maxwell Sheffield - Charles Shaughnessy

      Gracie - Madeline Zima

During this season, Maxwell and Fran's attraction to each other is tacitly acknowledged, although he will not act on it, much to Fran's frustration.
This leads Fran to date several men throughout the season - always, of course, with less than successful outcomes.
At one point she even moves in with Val, who convinced her to share her new condo in a building that's "crawling with single men", which turn out to be Judy Garland fans.
The children, now more grown up, have their own set of new challenges too.

This season features various celebrity guest stars, such as Elizabeth Taylor, Rosie O'Donnell, Lainie Kazan and Alex Trebek.

I love this season. I said in my review of season 2 that that was my favourite season, but after watching season 3 again, I'm not so sure.
One of the reasons I like it so much is the greater frequency of Val's appearances: this character always makes me laugh. Rachel Chagall and Fran Drescher are best friends in real life and it shows - they have great chemistry together, and their interactions are always hilarious.

It is difficult to pick favourite episodes, but here are a couple:

Ep.13: An Offer She Can't Refuse: Fran starts dating the handsome father of one of Gracie's friends...only it then appears that he is involved with the mafia.

Ep.19: Love is a Many Blundered Thing: Fran receives a message from a secret admirer that wants her for his valentine, and believing it to be from Maxwell, decides to answer him with a billboard on Times Square.
This really is an episode that requires viewers to suspend disbelief from start to finish - yet is none the less hilarious for it.

I would really recommend this series to everybody. Not every storyline is successful, but most are and are very funny indeed.

THE NANNY - The Complete Series 3 is available from Amazon from £22.44.
