The Shield, was an American Police drama that you may have heard of in the past decade or so. I say was, as it ended in 2008 and ran 7 seasons on the FX network in America, beginning in 2002. During it's run, the Shield picked up many award wins including main star Michael Chiklis winning a Primetime Emmy award and Golden Globe in 2002 for his superb portrayal of Strike team leader Vic Mackay. - This none to mention many other award's won or award's nominated for this great show.
To go more in depth to season 1, a new leader of a police force David Aceveda ( Portrayed by Benito Martinez )
has an aim to keep strike force leader Vic Mackay off the streets of LA.
The main season 1 cast is listed below.
Vic Mackey by Michael Chiklis
Shane Vendrell by Walton Goggins
Curtis Lemansky by Kenneth Johnson
Claudette Wyms by CCH Pounder
Holland Wagenbach by Jay Karnes
Danielle Sofer by Catherine Dent
Julien Lowe by Michael Jace
David Aceveda by Benito Martinez
Corrine Mackey by Cathy Cahlin Ryan
Monica Rawling by Glenn Close
Terry Crowley by Reed Diamond
Going in to watching the Shield first time, I can honestly say that I had never seen any of these fine actors and actresses in any prior work, I didn't even expect anything of them to be honest but came out more than pleasantly surprised.
In the States, the first season of the Shield premièred on March 12th 2002, and the season finale aired on June 4th 2002.
As for the DVD itself I was very pleased. - I'll post the features below.
13 episodes across 4 discs.
Certificate - 15
Run time - 9 hours 35 minutes ( Approx )
The special features are really great for big fans of the show in my opinion. The cast and crew provide excellent audio commentaries on all 13 episodes of season 1, which is truly a treat for watchers of the show. Also there are several features including the making of the Shield, and finally included are 17 deleted scenes and 8 cast auditions.
If I would have any let downs with this product it would definitely be the fact there are only 13 episodes, as I do tend to like shows were seasons run 20 plus episodes. However, in my eyes, the 13 episodes make a brilliant plot and story line and earns a 9/10 rating for the content on this set.
The first season was released on DVD in the UK in July 2003, and can be found very cheap on Amazon for around £7 new.
A perfect price to pay for such a wonderful opening series.
