The Tudors - Season 3 (DVD)
Advantages: Visually stunning and wonderful acting and dialogue
Disadvantages: Perhaps too tragic and gory for some people
The Tudors is a television series that is owned by Showtime and was previously watched on the BBC. It is a show consisting of four seasons and focuses on Henry and his emotional relationships between his wives, children, friends and the people he worked with.
By losing the star of the show in season 2 (Anne Boleyn as played by Natalie Dormer), season 3 had a lot of big shoes to fill and a lot to stand for. Season 2 had portrayed Anne Boleyn as a heroine and I think the show made a lot of people have a dislike for Jane Seymour, having witnessed a lot of unnecessary hate towards her. But just like seasons one and two, season three has a lot of great drama to look forward to.
Season 3 is mainly about his marriage to Jane Seymour and Anne Of Cleves. It also revolves around the Pilgrimage of Grace, the downfall of Thomas Cromwell, birth of Edward VI and Henry making peace with his daughters. And it also at the end shows the beginning of his relationship with Katherine Howard.
Anita Briem who played Jane Seymour in season 2 is replaced by Annabelle Wallis. As mentioned in my review in season 2, I didn't notice this at first but watching them both again, I realize there is a huge difference. They're both great actresses and I think Anita did a good job playing Jane when she was younger, but Annabelle does a really amazing job at giving Jane a wise and classy personality.
I've been loving this show and this series because I find it really touching. I was already interested in the Tudors having learned it at school and was fascinated and also both amazed and disgusted at how Henry was able to get six wives and the way he did it all because he wanted a son. One of my favourite scenes in this series is when Henry is with Jane at her deathbed. A lot of things in history books makes Henry come across as a cruel and selfish man, but this scene is so touching because you see Henry genuinely heartbroken over the loss of Jane and it also makes you wonder how he was actually feeling.
I'm really surprised to see Joss Stone and I think she did a real good job. At first it was weird seeing Joss talk in the german accent, but I was convinced from it. Joss' portrayal of Anne Of Cleves also made me think of something. I find it ironic that Anne Of Cleves was the one that Henry found the least attractive, but she was the one in my opinion who Henry treated better. Anne and Henry were on good terms and she approved of Henry's marriage to Katherine and also outlived the rest of his wives.
I really felt for Thomas Cromwell when he was executed. I think the show does a good job making you feel sympathy and emotions towards the rest of the characters on the show. I also think the casting, costumes and dialogue was excellent. It was a nice change of pace compared to the lot of thrills we got in season 2. Overall the show was brilliant and because I enjoyed it so much I got season 4 which I will review soon!
Summary: Magic season of the tudors.
