So after four seasons, this epic TV show has not faulted in anyway. Even with the untimely killing of many of the characters which made it what it was, the show continues to delve into new unchartered TV territory. New characters which have appeared have now, by the beginning of the fifth series, blossomed into their own part of the baltimore scenery, thus Michael is now part of the intimidating crew comprising of Marlo, Snoop and Chris Partlow and Clay Davis is shaking it up in court. Still the regulars in the form of McNulty, Bunk, Bubbles and the rest of them do not lose anything in their character even 50 episodes or so in.
This just goes to show how complex and amazing this show is. It loses nothing over time like only the greats can do (I think there isn't a poor Simpsons episode until at least 100 episodes in, for example, and they're only 20 minutes long!). In actual fact, with the opening of a new area in each season (The Docks, Politics, the Schools and now the Newspapers) this show only gets richer andmore connected, until the viewer isn't just watching a piece of entertainment but a whole outlook on society as it stands in Baltimore.
As i said, the newspaper and their decline comes into reckoning in this season and this supports the Baltimore's police continual hunt for Marlo and his crew, after the slaughters in the vacant houses were discovered at the end of the fourth season. However, political involvement means funding is abysmally low which sets up the premise for another interesting season. After almost a season on the sidelines, McNulty (played brilliantly by the Englishman Dominic West) is back on fine drunken form providing a plot which initially grew a response of absurdity from the viewer but transpired into another creative, realistic and pensive storyline.
The final scene of this season wraps everything up and there is some finality for most of your favourite characters. I do believe that every character from previous seasons, who has remained alive, makes a welcome return either in a critical (yet forgotten about role) or as a pleasing cameo. Though only 10 episodes in this season, each one is as engrossing as ever.
When I finished watching this season I felt like my television watching life had nothing more to ligve for and even many months later I have nothing left to fill the void.
Summary: The greatest TV show returns in brilliant form, the press being the shows latest area to document
