Advantages: mix of music. Quite friendly in some music scenes.
Disadvantages: Quite expensive at some venue. Small city does'nt get many big name artists.
The UEA is situated on one side of Norwich City. I havn't studied at the UEA but i do know about the bars and nitelife, as i studied at the Norwich School of art and design which is in the City. As a small city your not gonna get big festivals going on, yet if you like music you should be able to find a least 1 or 2 pubs or clubs to fit your needs: The Waterfront: The waterfront is one of the bigger rock clubs in Norwich holding regular club nites of Goth /Metal /80s and Indie among it live music events. If you read rock listings your bound to find a few bands playing here live. In the past bands such as Guano apes, Reef,Less than Jake,Earthtone9 etc have played here.A usual clubnite costs about 3-4 quid but if your a member of the UEA rock club you'll be able to get in for about a quid. Fat Pauly's: This is one of the toilet venues where big bands first start when they are touring around the country. Mainly a punk/ska crowd here, there are usually live bands playing most nites but there are also clubnites in popular rock/metal.Similar pricing to The Waterfront execept on live music nites when the price varies. This venue is temporarily closed at the moment. UEA : The Uea has been known to house some good live music every so often. Past bands have spanned from Placebo to the Lemonheads. Others include Less than Jake,Reef,James,Ash,MarkB and Blade,Feeder etc. There are often clubnites held here in many different music genres from dance parties to rock bands.Obviously if your a UEA student or have a NUS acrd your gonna have a very cheap nite when you come here. However live music tickets often cost a bit more. Liquid/Ikon: These are fairly large dance clubs ranging from regular music nites with House/Garage/r'n'b/trance and more. At liquid on a monday nite they have a 70s nite which allows you to get in cheaply if you dress up in a 70s style outfit. Time: This is the biggest of the dan
ce clubs and has a similar style of music. However occasionally the resident DJ is replaced with guests such as Lisa Pin-up(i have no idea who she is but other people seemed impressed?!?!) and Boy George (Yeah, i know who he is!). It's one of the more popular dance clubs and has a student nite on a tuesday, which plays cheesey pop/current dance and some old 90s classics which you can't help but sing to, and then feel strangly quite old! Norweigan Blue/Old Orleans/Squares: These are all bars located on the fairly newly built riverside complex. Norweigan blue and squares are very fashion concious posh bars where you'd have to wear proper shoes and pay high prices. Where as Old Orleans(my favourite of the three) is a bit more laid-back and does wicked cocktails,it's a little bit cheaper, but would still have to be saved for a nite when a student has more than just a couple of quid! Mojos: Mojos is a bit of a mix really. It's laid-back but sometimes dressy, it's rocky but also dancy, it plays all sorts of music but the favourite nite here would be Super-fly on a Wednesday when the Dj's downstair spin a mix of new and old funk fusion.James brown to Jurassic five, you'll get the whole funk combo here! It's the type of place you go to and there will always be people dancing, right from the word go, however you will find that many people are painfully fashionable(but in an effortless casual kinda way) so you could feel slighly inadequate unless you've got a few bevvies inside you!Other nites include Hip hop and R'n'b. Ponana's: This club/bar is again a kinda mix,it mixes dance with salsa and has a kinda turkish looking decor. If you go to University at the UEA and decide to take up the nite life in Norwich be sure to bring your I.D. Due to 3 recent tragic accidents involving three underage teenagers, most of the bars and clubs have tried to form a union, where by if you can't prov
ide I.D you and your group of friends may be turned away. This doesn't always happen as i've been out without getting checked quite alot but it's better to be safe than ruin a nite out. Hope this helps.
