I did my degree with the University of London external programme, and Birkbeck was my host uni. I found the degree really hard work - it pushed me to use my initiative since the only contact allowed with the university was for "non-academic" reasons (I've had more contact with them as an alumni than as a student). Studying at Birkbeck opens up new opportunities for mature students, without having to take time out from your career. But it is hard work - especially if you are holding down a full time job. The first year psychology course requires two evenings of lectures a week, increasing to three evenings in the second year. So it is not surprising that class sizes are cut dramatically after the Christmas break. The teaching standard is high - many lecturers choose to teach mature students - and research is well rated.
