External Programme (Birkbeck College, University of London in general)
Member Name: ariom
Advantages: flexibility, location of exam centres Disadvantages: lack of contact with tutors or students, materials I did my degree with the University of London external programme, and Birkbeck was my host uni. I found the degree really hard work - it pushed me to use my initiative since the only contact allowed with the university was for "non-academic" reasons (I've had more contact with them as an alumni than as a student). I enjoyed the freedom this offered but some others may find it bewildering. The lack of a detailed syllabus, having to guess what to write about from past exam papers was a major disadvantage. The resources were also generic and not specifically written for the course. However there was a good range of options within the modules, though this had to be pre-selected at the start of the course. The student-to-student network is a good idea, but poorly used. There is a good range of exam centres nationally, meaning most uk students won't have to travel too far for exams. The course is 100% exam assessed, which gives flexibility to spread studies throughout the year around work, but may not suit people whp prefer coursework. Summary: value for money if you work well under your own initiative |
