Advantages: great nightlife, great people, great course.
Disadvantages: being skint! Typical student!
Havn't written a review in a while - simply because I have just started university. I am currently going to Cardiff University and i'm studying Criminology and Sociology.
First impressions... WOW. I chose this uni because of its 5 star rating in the School of Social Sciences Department - which is where I am now based. To get 5 stars is a pretty big achievement, aswell as being in the top 100 universities in the world.
Tutors/Lecturers - excellent. They are very proffessional, yet as a student I did want someone who I could approach if I ever needed help. They are very approachable, and already I have found "ontogenetics" quite a difficult subject to grasp - so the tutor spent some time one to one with me. ONE-TO-ONE when there is like 200 students in that particular lecture is very good if you ask me. 10/10
University buildings - facsinating. There are statues and so much history around the buildings that you are NEVER bored. They are so beautifully laid out. The lecture halls are huge, which is good as they accomodate my subject which is completely full with 400 students! Seats are relatively comfortable - but not comfortable enough to fall asleep in, which I think was done on purpose =). 8/10
Halls - Small but sufficient. Bedrooms are quite small in Talybont (one of the main student halls). But the shared kitchen is plently big enough and is probably the most used room in the whole "flat". She pays about £800 a term for her accomodation. I personnally have my own flat rather than going into halls - but my cloest friends flat is "cosy" to say the least. 6/10
Students - well. We are students. We party way too much and don't do enough work. But thats why you only need to get 40% in the first year right? We are MEANT to go out and not remember most of this year. Students from all around the world - its a real culture shock when you come from a small village in the corner of west wales. But the people are mostly lovely. 8/10
Night-life - as in any city - IT ROCKS! Bars, clubs, pubs, gigs. Whatever your scene is - Cardiff has it to offer. Thursday nights are the nights most students go out - some amazing places include - Revolution, Oceana, Tiger Tiger, Walkabout. Also, the prices are pretty good. Students also seem to get hold of these Student Discount books - 2 for 1 on drinks in clubs/bars etc. It's A LOT of fun =). 10/10
Ok The Course - I love it. Very interesting. Theres a lot of support around the university, so if you are finding uni life a bit too difficult and stressful then there is help on hand. I think with any university, if you really like a particular subject - you will love it when you get further and deeper into it at uni. 9/10
Prices - It costs just over £3000 a year at any uni in the UK but... if you have lived in Wales for more than 5 years and you go to a Welsh University, you only pay roughly £1255 - which is amazing. I was really worried about the debt I would be accumulating at uni - but this has really put my mind at rest. 9/10
Overall summary
I love this uni. It has a really low crime rate - which is important as statistically students are more likely to become victims of crime than the elderly!!!! The nightlife is great, shops are brill - student discount everywhere! Plenty of places to go out and socialise... and eat! The university itself is beautiful and the people are great. I don't think i could be happier with the choice I have made!
9/10
Summary: Lovely place to be, with so much support!
