Advantages: Teaches good skills, only course of it's kind in UK
Disadvantages: Damn hard!
Well, I am now coming up to my second semester of my third year on the BSc (Hons) Computer Games Technology course, which is the only one of it's kind in this country. That is the main reason that I chose to come here. Actually, to be honest it is the ONLY reason why I decided to come here! I was very lucky to be accepted onto the course in the very first year that it was run, and that means to some extent that those of us that are now on the third year of the course have been used as guinea pigs for those coming on to the course after us, but I have to say that overall the course has been excellent. There is a good mix of continuous assessment (Coursework) and examinations, and there is a good range of skills taught. Basically, this course teaches the fundamentals of Computer Science, and programming in C, as well as concentrating on things like console programming using the Sony Playstation. It also includes modules that encourage us to develop our creativity, and our efficiency within a team. There is also the chance to include modules in marketing or Japanese language and culture. The Japanese modules are excellent for anyone hoping to work for the likes of Sony, Sega etc, and they really do give an excellent insight into the Japanese way of life. There's a good mix of people on the course too, in all three years that it has so far. (when we move on to honours next year, there will be four lots of us) There are people of all ages, from all over the UK and Europe, and from different backgrounds, but everyone is really friendly and hardworking, and we all can work well together on group projects and such like. The course has lecturers that have worked in the industry, (such as ex-DMA design man Alisdair Houston) and software houses such as Codemasters often come in to talk about recruitment as well as technical issues. If you want to be involved in one of the most exciting ent
ertainment industries in the world today, then you really should consider this course. Be warned though, it is REALLY hard work. You may think that I am biased, but I swear it has to be harder than any other degree course I know. Why? because we're always working on 2 or 3 big projects while everyone else has a few essays to do that can be completed within a couple of days. We really have to produce..... If you're committed, you'll do well on this course, if you're lazy, you won't.
