I have to admit that when I was filling out my UCAS form, QMW was far from being my first choice; but several rejections later, it seemed teh most promising offer I had, and I was compelled to accept. I am glad I did. My three years at the School of English and Drama were phenomenal. The school is particularly large, and whilst this means that classes are sometimes quite full (when everyone bothers to turn up!) and that you may not always get your first choice of course units, the advantage of this is that is a large body of teaching staff who have a wide variety of research interests. Although all university departments obviously have their particular specialities, the School of Biological Sciences at QMW has an overwhelming bias on marine ecology. The molecular courses that are offered take a serious second place and as such are hard to recommend. In particular microbiology is seriously understaffed, despite being one of the most popular of courses on offer. The Head of School (a marine ecologist) appointed more and more ecologists to the staff each year, so it is difficult to see how the unbalance that exists could change.
