Advantages: Good teaching against the odds

Disadvantages: Lack of support for what are some of their most popular courses!

Although all university departments obviously have their particular specialities, the School of Biological Sciences at QMW has an overwhelming bias on marine ecology. The molecular courses that are offered take a serious second place and as such are hard to recommend. In particular microbiology is seriously understaffed, despite being one of the most popular of courses on offer.

The Head of School (a marine ecologist) appointed more and more ecologists to the staff each year, so it is difficult to see how the unbalance that exists could change.

In essence if you are planning to study any other science than marine ecology at QMW I would advise you to think again, although to be fair the level of teaching is on the whole very good - it is just a question of lack of support for staffing levels.
