Advantages: Enthusiastic staff, networking opportunities

Disadvantages: Occasional lack of co-ordination

I'm currently studying part-time for a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management at Strathclyde University and I'm in my final year (2 of 2). Studying one day per week at a university is one of the ways you can achieve Graduate Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development - just about essential if you're planning a career in human resources.
I nearly chose to do the course by distance learning but the university option was less expensive and I thought that it would be useful to have contact with others from the personnel field. The course still weighs in at around £3,500 over the 2 years so it's pretty obligatory to have the financial backing of your employer!
Over the two years, there have been some very good points and some areas of the lecture programme which could have been improved. Two big plus points are that most of the lecturers/tutors will go out of their way to help you with any problems you may have and they'll quite happily give you feedback on essays and exams. Occasionally, there has been a lack of organisation and co-ordination - for example, being given several incorrect dates for exams - but the quality of the course overall is high. It has certainly helped me in my job, even if there is a lot of human resource theory to digest, and it has made me think more deeply about key personnel issues.
Subject modules include: the corporate environment; management; statistics; employee relations; employment law; and staff training and development. The going can be tough - balancing a demanding course with a full time job and your life is not easy - but careful planning of your workloads should see you through.
