Advantages: Good teaching staff, Excellent reseearch for a modern university
Disadvantages: Has an unfair bad reputation, Staff are overworked
About De Montfort University (DMU) DMU is a new/modern university with multiple campuses, spread through the Midlands. Its a large university with subjects across most major areas. My views I graduated from DMU with an MSc some years ago and have to say it was a very good place to be, in my view its 'bad' reputation was totally unfair. Now you may say, what do I know? Well I've been to an older univeristy and another new one, in total I've got three degress so figure I've been around a little. Facilities/Teaching Well I was in computing, they were excellent, we had good equipment, excellent lecturers and a good course. I can't comment on the undergraduate experience as I was post-grad but the course was intellectually demanding, but the lecturers were very supportive. Although I do think their teaching load was probably too high, and at times this may have effected things. The course was excellent and I understand the government inspectors thought the same thing. Student Facilities I've been told that DMU now have a more flash union, which isn't quite as good (in terms of facilities) as the old one. Comparison with other places There is no reason to see why DMU should be considered any worse than any other unversity, and that includes some of the older ones! In fact having seen what other places (which were considered to be better) taught at a similar level our course was much, much harder! Overall I think the modern institutions have gone through their transition phase and are now well placed to provide a more relevant set of courses than their more established counter parts. DMU in particular has done very well in research, and this was very evident in the teaching we received. However before you sign on the dotted line its worth doing your homework, so have a look at www.hefce.ac.uk it ha s full breakdowns of the quality o
f the teaching at all UK HE institutions.
