Well when I thought of America I gues I had a kind of romantic and film based outlook on things. However when I got here it turned out that everything was just as I had imagined if not better (ok some aspects are worse but everywhere has its own problems). So I am over in Los Angeles for a year as part of my American Studies programme at Hull University (the best university ever!!). I would really recommend a year abroad to anybody who is even remotely considering it. I spent nine months living and studying in Limburg, Belgium as part of an Erasmus Exchange programme run by my University, Aberystwyth. I lived in a house arranged by the university in Belgium with students from all over Europe. There was about 30 of us from everywhere, UK, Ireland, Spain, France, Germany, Greece, even Finland and it was a great way to get to know people from different countries in Europe and get to know their cultures too. The host University was really good, they arranged loads of activities and trip to places around Belgium. I went on one of these exchange schemes, I went to the south of France To the Institute of European Design (translated!) in Toulon. Toulon is right down on the corner of the "bowl" of the med & consequently we were right near the beach & only 45 mins from Marseille. This whole coast line is great (if expensive!) & we ended up living in a little village with a port and 30 secs from the beach!! A hardship as you can imagine!! Ok, so what advice can I give you; 1. make sure you get on well with those you are going with; I went with 2 other lads & we got on famously for the whole 4.5 months we were there.
