Advantages: lovely area to live and a great library and computer area

Disadvantages: Some of the buildings are a little outdated

I did 3 years at Winchester straight out of secondary starting in 2000. They were some of the best 3 years of my life! Winchester University as it now is called is not one of your massive universities like you might get in London or some of the bigger cities. It is placed in a very beautiful clean, safe part of Hampshire with beautiful countryside views from the university and the surrounding area .Even though it is right by a prison don't let that put you off as it is very safe here and there is very little campus security needed unlike some of your bigger universities. As for the actual university well the library and computer facilies are fantastic and are in a newish building so plenty of room there. A few of the other buildings when I went at that time were a little outdated but it should be noted that since I have left in 2003 it has undergone a massive renovation of the student union/canteen and a few other places so i cannot comment on this side of it i'm afraid as I haven't been in the new buildings! The student accomodation is variable. Catered is right on campus in the older buildings and these are okay but the far nicer self catered accomodation is around 15 minute walk away. The food at the time was ok, not wonderful and the catered system worked on a card system where you had a certain amount of money on your card and when this was gone you would have to put more so you could buy more meals. This student village" Westdowns" as it is called has its own student bar and laundrette and I really wish my parents would have let me spend my first year here! This is where all my friends lived so I got to know it quite well! My actual course was a small one- It was social care and only had around 25 students, all the lecturers were lovely perhaps not quite lecturerey enough but I think that was due to them being less academic and more social care based! The university of Winchester is one that I would highly recommend to anyone!
