Advantages: great courses, great tutors, great friends
Disadvantages: LMU is huge! easy to get lost in!
Being a first year at leeds metropolitan university everything is still shiny and new for me so i will give you my point of view on LMU. The years starts around 19th September with the freshers fairs which give you a chance to look around if you miss the open days that have been organised. The student hall gives businesses all around leeds the chance to come and show their goods to old and new students although i'm still wondering why wilkinsons was handing out free spatulas to new students, i wonder who thought that one up! it must have been kinda like this....
'mmmm what can we give new students that they will absolutely need?'
*thinks a bit*
' i know!, a spatula!'
other than that mind boggling occurrence so far i've had no problems with anybody coming into the university. The course I am studying is English and History and it is run by the school of cultural studies. The lecturers are really good at what they do, showing passion and enthusiam at all times for the subjects that they teach. If you have any problems whatsoever you can take it to your personal tutor who will jump through hoops to help you out.
If you have trouble understanding something you are being taught, don't be afraid to speak out! as long as the tutors know you are having a problem with it they will be only too happy to talk it through with you until you do understand fully and make sure that you can put that knowledge into effective use at the seminars.
The building itself is actually 6 buildings joined together and are labelled accordingley, i.e a building, b building etc and there are signposts throughout the university showing you how to get to where you need to be.
The catering facilities are fantastic especially in the refectory which is located near a helpzone not far from the main entrance. The food is not only affordable (a breakfast comprising ten items costs 3.40 and includes a free drink). There is also a student union bar which has a small catering facility attatched to it. the prices there are slightly higher but the advantage here is that you can smoke in this area whereas you can't in any other part of the university. This is also the place where they hold all their live gigs attracting names such as electric six and the bloodhound gang.
The university is very easy to reach being located behind the civic hall and there are buses that will drop you practically outside the main building itself. there are other university buildings located nearby, such as the brunswick building which is situated behind the merrion centre which makes for great shopping when you have finished a lecture!
as far as i know there are three seperate campuses with the university. the civic quarter campus which is where my course is located), beckett park campus (i haven't been here so i don't know about this one), and the headingley campus (again i haven't visited so i don't know). each of these campuses specialises in specific courses, such as mine being attatched to the (main) civic quarter campus with the school of cultural studies but all the campuses are easily reached and not too difficult to navigate through as everything you need is either signposted or has a map to it which can be found in the helpzones.
There are also regular jobshops which you can register for online and these people can help you find work that revolves around your timeable, not the other way round so you don't have to worry about missing your studies. payment here is weekly and you have to fill in the payment claim form but as far as i know, everybody who has registered has been paid on time and has had no problems in any of the places they work.
all in all these things alone (at least for me) make this a great place to study. There is a heaving nightlife in leeds so anybody wishing to get into lectures with a hangover the next day will be able to do so (although i think you would have to be slightly insane to try it!)and will be able to do so without spending too much money! always a bonus in my book.
So go on, take a look, take a risk, you never know, you might just like it!
Summary: great people, relaxed atmosphere, great food!
