Advantages: you call the shots and be your own teacher

Disadvantages: still too expensive for most people

I had some time on my hands after having my first child, and fancied doing something to better the old brain, and someone suggested the open university, I thought I that I wouldn't be good enough and that I wouldn't be able to keep up with the methods and pace, but i soon got the hang of it....

I decided to do Social Sciences, and introduction course in Humanities. For a start it was current, topical and relevent to todays way of life. It covered crime over the last sixty years, globalization (and those of you who have read my other articles will know I have a hang up on this subject!) and just about anything else found in the papers, tv, radio; anything up to date even greenhouse gases which is interesting and both worrying to learn!

I studied at home when little person was asleep. The books are easy to read and understand, everything comes through the post. And to work to deadlines as far as essays go, these can be abit stressful especially if you are not used to this way of learning or that it has been a long time!

There is one tip I must share with you....the way to get through it is to read what they say, then write it back to them but using different words.... it worked for me, I was terrible at studying as they like you to set aside certain numbers of hours to read certain chapters, and I couldn't get my head around that at all...

The courses are, it has to be said expensive, but if you recieve working family tax credit, council tax benefit, you will find these fees will be paid for you, but if you are like me and circumstances change and you go to start your second year and you don't recieve you benefits anymore, you'll find yourself in a shock.

Summary: worth it if you can get it for nothing

There's a lot more you can say about this! How much of your time does it take up (e.g. per week), how expensive is it, how many years will it take to complete a degree etc...

I did my degree as a mature student - not at the OU, but at Kingston (they had a specific programme at the time for mature students in the evenings). You're right - anyone CAN do it with a bit of application.
