Advantages: Great helpline
Disadvantages: Rubbish online tuition
I only did one thing with the OU and that was the YASS scheme for college students (AS/A2).
So I did this course with the OU paid for by my sixth form college I believe it was called Vandalism in Cyberspace.
Anyhoo, my experience with the OU... Well it was very good, there was a great helpline and although they can't resolve all enquiries straight away they usually refer you to a department/admin staff and get it sorted with a week (5 working days).
I found the website for my course (it was all web-based) a bit challenging to first find the login for students thing and then to actually login. Then we had the interface for my course's personal page which was really badly laid out as if someone with little web-building abilities had thrown it together in Word or something.
There was a lot of help though for my course but I didn't keep to it week by week and crammed everything right at the end to get my final assessment finished which is quite satisfying and they give you plenty of time to complete it. Even with the hectic schedule of college and my AS exams it slotted in nicely and although I may have missed out a whole week's worth of revision it did mean I've got something extra under my belt for the future.
Overall though if you are doing a proper course I can't comment but I would recommend them for simple courses lasting no more than 3-6mths because they are pretty easy to do and complete.
Summary: Great for people who are working/have kids
