Advantages: Good SU and nightlife, high quality of teaching
Disadvantages: None
I started university last September, studying civil engineering, and really the location of QUB was the main reason for me deciding to go there. I live in Northern Ireland, so I can travel home every weekend to get my washing done etc. I have really enjoyed my first year, and have very few complaints about the university in general.
I decided not to live in Elms, the main halls residence at QUB, but live in the COI centre, which is still affiliated with QUB, but a much smaller halls residence. I would highly recommend it as a place to live as the people are great, and the lifestyle is much calmer than that at Elms.
Belfast is a great place to live, and really adds to the whole university experience. The city centre is a short walk away, and there are metro buses running very regularly if you dont fancy walking. The nightlife is very good as well with plenty of places for students to go out and enjoy themselves after a hard day of lectures. A special mention should go to the SU, it is a very modern building and contains practicalities like a shop and a pharmacy, as well as plenty of bars.
QUB is ranked within the top 10 in the UK for its civil engineering course, and I have to say this was another attraction to go there. The course is hard, I won't lie, but ultimately it is very rewarding and well taught. There are a lot of foreign lecturers and they can sometimes be hard to understand in lectures, but generally they are very willing to help you outside of the lectures if you require further assistance.
The exam system is fairly standard, with two sessions each year, and the general pass mark is 40%. With most courses first year wont count towards your degree, so really you only require the minimum 40%, but after that you will be looking for higher marks to get a higher degree.
Ive spent relatively little time talking about the university and classes, but I think the accomodation and social aspect of going to university is just as, if not more important, so I hope this review is useful to prospective students.
Summary: If it ranks highly in your chosen course, a great place to study
