Advantages: good library, friendly atmosphere, great pub!

Disadvantages: bad canteen

I started RGU when I was 16 years old. I left school abruptly after two weeks of sixth year, as I'd had a dramatic bust up with my friends (ironically they made up with me when they found out I was leaving, and begged me to stay!)

I was unsure of what it was I really wanted to do, I had a vague idea about wanting to become a journalist, but I didn't know how to get into it. The publishing course at RGU seemed my best option. I called up one day and asked if they had any places, and bravo, I was in!

I was so scared when I first started! There was one person in my class who I actually knew! That was surprising, although he was really just a friend of a friend of a friend, if you get my drift! Anyway, the lecturers seemed friendly enough.

My course leader though, didn't impress me, her attitude was that you needed a 3 (ratings go from 1-6 - six being highest) to pass your essays/exams, so if I aimed for that, I'd be fine! That seems to be the attitude of most lecturers here. I think it has something to do with not wanting us to feel under pressure, but sometimes it feels as though they don't expect us to achieve!

The lecturers are really friendly and approachable though, they are located on the top floor and you are encouraged to visit them whenever you like.

Some other services available at the Garthdee Campus: The library here is very extensive. They hold books on most subjects, as well as journals, magazines, newspaper clippings, monographs etc. It you needed a specific book which was being held at another RGU library, they'd order it in for you. It is a very quiet area, perfect for studying, with private study areas, and computers. You must keep to their rules about quietness though, or you could have your library card taken away.

The canteen is a joke! Outside caterers are taken in, and basically they charge us a fortune to poison ourselves! I wouldn't eat here to be h
onest, although in the mornings it's not too bad for a bacon roll. It's just the prices that are hugely unjustified. It is a self-clear facility which means it can be difficult to find a clean table. The same goes for the shop, overpriced with nasty workers!

There is a little pub straight across from the art school which is really good. It's not overpriced and the bar staff are really friendly. The food's good too.

Overall the School of Information and Media (one of a few faculties at Garthdee) isn't too bad. Everyone's really friendly and the building is bright and funky. It could be better, but it does for me!
