Advantages: Modern , Spacious, lots of available computers
Disadvantages: Awful food fromSodexho, ID check on door a waste of time
OK before I start I would like to clarify that as I am a student on the garthdee campus and in woolmanhill halls this opinion does not relate to the kepplestone/schoolhill/ect campuses as I know nothing of them. Right, here we go! My first impression off the Garthdee campus as I got off the shuttle bus from schoolhill (a very economical and useful feature of RGU) was that it looked more like an office than a Uni with all the glass and the contemporary design (apparently it's so it can't be seen above the tree line and therefore does not spoil the view). Once inside it begins to look more university like with the students meandering everywhere, from the libary to the untidy canteen and occasionally to lectures. Not that getting in was exactly unfraught as we had to wait while a janitor checked everyones student ID's before they could enter. However inside on the right is the uni canteen, contract out to sodexho they produce all manner of over-priced inedible substances you can imagine, the only exception (in that they are edible, not cheap) being the bacon butty's served from 9:30ish til sometime before 11. I would be more exact about times but unfortunatly they never are. On the left you find the libary, which has books (not supriseingly), a good selection of journals and computers with internet access. Also in the libary they have the opac system which although often tells you a book is on the shelf when it blatently isn't is very useful for restamping books when you don't have them with you and also for ordering books which are on other campuses or currently out on loan. Straight ahead is the wee shop, also run by sodexho, the sandwhiches are vile, however they stock a healthy supply of chocolates and crisps which will keep you going through lectures if you don't have time to get to The Caledon. The Caledon aka Frydays is situated opposite grays and serves some very tasty, competively priced meals, (I recomm
end the beef lasagne)it also has a pool table and giant connect four. The staff in here unlike the sodexho staff are friendly and helpful. As for the lecture theatres the standard is pretty good, they are rarely too cold/hot, and being well ventilated, "freshers Flu" is not as prevalent as at other uni's. On the whole the lecturers are pretty helpful, being very approachable, even if a few can be somewhat sarcastic. However the opinion of the lecturers would appear that you should only aim for a pass mark (a 3 on a 1-6 scale with 6 as the highest) which I felt somewhat pessamistic. Overall, I feel, RGU is definatly a university I would reccommend sixth years to consider when making there choices

- 15/11/01 I'm in Klsy's class, and I have to agree with the fact that Sodexho are AWFUL!(sorry Swifty - another class mate!). Also the lecturers are pretty pessimistic! |

- 21/10/01 I'll bet you didn't find nasty bits of who knows what in the coronation chicken and have you even tried the burgers?? as well as that the chips always taste of fish! |

- 20/10/01 Nice one Klsy, a bit harsh on the old Sodexho though - they may be pricey but the food's not normally THAT bad! |
