Glasgow University in general
by Jenkatclaire
I have been a student here since September 2010. I chose it primarily because of it's high entrance grades and position on league tables - I did want an impressive university for my degree. But I think the University offers a lot more than that!
Glasgow has a very flexible system for courses i.e. in your first and second year ... (unless you're doing something very vocational like Medicine, Dentistry or Vet Science) you can do a combination of 3 subjects. This means that you do not have to choose your major/honours subject until the end of 2nd year/beginning of 3rd which allows you to really decide which subjects you prefer! This flexibility was particularly useful for me as I have changed the degree from what I originally applied for based on my first and second year, I know a lot of people who are the same.
Also, the facilities are second to none. The gym is very up to date and if you avoid peak times it is usually possible to get a machine quite easily (it is also being extended in the near future). The library has a good stock of books and a very good reservation/recall system so you have access to all the books you may need for your course! Computers on campus are hard to get especially around exam/deadline times so I would advise bringing a laptop in if it's desperate you use a computer. The lecture and teaching rooms are a good size and have all the extras (TV's, projectors etc) that would ever be needed.
Also, there are 2 unions GUU and QMU, you can join both or just one, they have different events throughout the year and throw a very decent freshers week each year! The Students Representative Council (SRC) are very good at getting across student opinion and fighting your corner when you need it. There are a huge umber of societies pretty much catering for any student interest from sportsto gaming to subject based societies and even a Cheese Society! All of the student bodies have excellent student representation - i.e. run for students by students!
Also, just look at the building, it's beautiful - granted you'll spend most of your time in Boyd Orr which isn't so impressive, but graduation does take place in Hogwarts so your photos will be nice at least...
However, uni is what you make it. If you don't try and get involved (with societies or volunteering) I can guarantee you won't have as good a time as others. You have to put yourself forward for things and it will be absolutely amazing! I can't give that as advice enough! I have only just started doing this fully and though it is hard to balance my workload and my social responsibilities it had been the best year of my life so far - so just go for it!
Also, the centre of the city and the first year halls are quite far away from the uni itself which can get annoying in terms of transport but once you get the hang of it it's not much of a problem - or I never found it to be. SRC even runs free buses to halls.
I have loved my time here - first year was a bit more lonely, but then I joined societies (which I urge everyone to do) and I gt more friends and felt more at home! I would recommend this uni to anyone wanting a good quality of education and a good student experience. Read the complete review |

Napier University in general
by vickijohn2012
To be honest, I loved every minute of my time at Edinburgh Napier University. I couldn't have asked for a better student experience in my four years I spent at University. The University however is spread out over four campuses throughout Edinburgh with one taking about 40 minutes on a bus. The University offers an extensive range of ... books from all three of its main libraries located at Merchiston, Sighthill and Craiglockhart. Especially the Sighthill library which is spread out over 5 floors. The Jack Kilby Computer Centre in the Merchiston Campus has over 1000 computers for use 24 hours a day 7 days a week, making this a useful place for working in both groups and on individual work. The campuses of the university have great accessibility with over three buses running to each of the campuses, apart from Craighouse which has now been sold. The University offers a friendly atmosphere, the students and the professor's alike offer a great, friendly, lively and exciting place to study, the city of course also makes Edinburgh Napier University a great place to study and to live as a student. If you work hard and put effort into your work then you will succeed at Napier. The sports union has one of the most extensive teams in Scotland, playing over fifteen sports against other universities. Team Napier offers hoodies, tracksuits, polo tops so you can feel involved in the whole university experience. Since the introduction of the latest president, the university has increased in both popularity and worth. The new president has made it his aim to make Napier University fulfilling, hardworking and fun all at the same time. The University have since rented out the function suite at a bar in the City Centre as their student union offering various games for the students to play such as beat the president and deal or no deal, where the student can win £250. Brilliant. I think that Napier is becoming even more desirable as a student due to the hard work that the current president is putting into his job. The canteen facilities at Napier still leave a little to be desired as they are only open till about 3pm, and when the computer centre is open 24hrs, you can get hungry, and not being allowed to eat in there has caused me problems on many occasions. Toilet facilities are great at the university as there is a toilet on every floor of the tower blocks. I only graduated in June and can safely say this is a brilliant university. If you put enough into it and work hard. It is great for student experience and I would not choose another place to study if I could have my time again. Choose Napier for friendliness, cleanliness and a great environment. The university is only set to get better due to the ideas the current president is putting forward. Napier can certainly only get bigger and better. Hopefully one day it will compete with the reviews of Edinburgh University. Also at Napier you are all as one, team napier, you will never feel part of a bigger or better student body in any university, togetherness is key at Napier and once you go there you will realise this. Honestly the best experiences of my life so far have been had at Edinburgh Napier. Read the complete review |

University of Aberdeen in general
by SpeedReviews
I am currently studying Law and ever since the open Day at the University of Aberdeen I knew that this was the best place to be. They were so welcoming to new prospective students and instantly made you feel at ease and like this was your home. Aberdeen is always in the top spots for studying law in Scotland and that was reaffirmed as ... soon as I started lectures and tutorials. The Lecturers and Tutors were not only friendly and always looking to help, they were clear experts and knew exactly what they were talking about. But of course this is just talking about the quality of the Law School.
The location of the university is beautiful being in Old Aberdeen. Buildings like the Kings College and Elphinstone Hall are great looking old buildings, along with the cobbled streets. The lecturer threatres wish I was in was the biggest ones such as in MacRobert and the Arts lecture threatre and these were great and within a 5 minute walk of each other. A new library was just built and opened in the summer of 2011 which is absolutely spectacular. It is made of all glass, with 7 floors and is a great place to study during exam time with its late open hours. Of course there is also a very good separate law library with all the books and case reviews you could wish for.
I stayed at Hillhead for first year accommodation and it was amazing and really made my first year at university. I stayed at New Carnegie Court and could not recommend it enough. The union pub is in Hillhead and a two minute walk away. There is also a Lidl down the hill where you could go for the weekly shop and affordable prices. Buses come into Hillhead roughly every 20 minutes which was great, providing a 5 minute journey to university when you couldn't be bothered walking the 10 minute journey through the beautiful Seaton Park! It would also take about 20-25 minutes to get into Union Street.
For those going on a night out there is no competition to Aberdeen nightlife! From Hillhead it is about £12 to Union Street by Taxi and split between a few people is a very good price. There is many night clubs to chose from ranging from expensive to dirt cheap! Read the complete review |
