Advantages: make new friends, keep fit, good fun

Disadvantages: very addictive!

I can't speak for other sports clubs or societies but I had a great time as a member of the Southampton Vixens, the university's Cheerleading club.

I had never done cheerleading before but i was keen to do something new. I was suprised to find it is such a serious coetitive activity, the squad compete a 2 minute routine made up of stunts, dance and gymnatics set to music at the annual British Cheerleading Championships!

The squad was made up of all girls (although boys are welcome to join!) who all made me feel very welcome. There were training sessions twice a week in the early evening and we would have regular 'social' nights out on a wednesday so everyone got the chance to get to know the rest of the team. On sundays we would also support our university's american football team by cheering on the sidelines of their matches.

It was great fun being part of a university club, as good way to keep fit after all the uni drinking and a great way of making new friends.

Summary: a great way to try something new and make new friends in the process!
