Advantages: HIgh academic standard; careful tutoring; charming mediaeval university

Disadvantages: Not many; a long way north I suppose; local accent impenetrable

When I first came north as an undergrad in Aberdeen University I took a wander through the old town, along the cobbled street with its eccentric side alleys, along the Chanonry to St Machar Cathedral, through Seaton Park to the Brig of Balgownie, then back to wonderful King's College, crown towered and golden - and fell in love with the university. I found the mood of the place perfect for study; my idea of what a university should be. I didn't find the place particularly cold and the welcome from my tutor was warm and entirely helpful. I thought the academic standard in my department was very good indeed and the head of department was a leading light in my field. If you are prepared to work and show genuine commitment, the opportunity to do very well is certainly there. I never came across racism; quite the reverse in fact. On the basis of my experience, which obviously isn't everybody's, I wholeheartedly recommend Aberdeen.

Summary: An excellent place if you are prepared to work hard; no good for loafers
