Advantages: Location, American Studies, support, equipment, activities
Disadvantages: Some of the teaching in the FIlm department
Admittedly UCLAN wasn't my first choice of university, but I got accepted through Clearing onto the combined honours course of Film Production, American Studies and Journalism.
Journalism:
I found the lecturer to be too intimidating for my liking and it felt like I was back in high school (I was 21 when I started), but I quickly found that Journalism wasn't for me anyway so dropped the subject but I've heard good things from other students who have continued with it so my experience might have been a one off.
American Studies:
What can I say? This course rocks! The tutors are very good at delivering lectures (one sings and plays the guitar!). There's humour and debate and the lessons are never dull. Plus when Obama won the elections we got a huge tin of Celebrations to enjoy!
Film Production:
This course is great for anyone wanting to know how to make movies/documentaries/short films/experimental flms. Granted the teaching wasn't up to scratch in first semester and a lot of the stuff I ended up teaching myself. You've got to know how to use a Mac before you start otherwise little help is given to us PC-ers but the facilities are excellent and there's always enough equipment for everyone.
The campus:
The campus is close the city and train station and offers lots to do, there's numerous societies to join and sports clubs. There's loads of great venues for nights out and you're spoiled for choice on things to do.
So come to an open day at UCLAN and you mgiht be pleasently surprised!
Summary: Good enough place to get a degree.
