Advantages: friendly, cheap cost of living, good reputation

Disadvantages: small campus which may not be your thing

Hull University has the best of all worlds. I spent one year there in 1993 as part of a teacher training degree, and lived in one of the houses (Thwaite) just outside Hull.

The university itself is quite close to the city centre (10 min bus ride away) and is in a leafy area.

The campus is small for a university, which is convenient as everything is close to hand. It has a good reputation, especially for mathematics and science orientated degrees.

However, because it is small doesn't mean it is lacking in facilities - the sports hall is great. As is the student union. There is a well stocked computer centre, available for everyone to use, and an on-campus bank (but few shops).

It has an extremely good library, the Philip Larkin library, named after the poet who was librarian there for many years. Spanning several floors, this is well stocked, especially in literature.

There's a wide range of courses to choose from, and everyone seems to be really friendly (Northern hospitality).

There are four main halls of residence, and each has it's own distinct personality (Thwaite Hall is the posh one!), as well as several streets near the campus that are used for student houses at reasonable rates (everything is quite cheap in Hull).

I certainly enjoyed my time there, and found everyone to be very friendly. This is helped by the compact nature of the campus, and the fact that it is close to the city centre, but just far enough away to give you breathing space.

I applied to Hull uni and they were always quick to respond and very friendly. Even when I declined they kept sending friendly letters trying to persude me otherwise! They do have a personal touch which some of the larger unis don't.
