Advantages: Big

Disadvantages: Everything else

Manchester Sucks. It may be big, it may be bold, but its downright ugly at the same time. grey slabs of concrete is the main memory I carry from my visit to this Uni.

Ok, so the city itself is pretty exciting with more activites and distractions than a student could ever hope for, but that comes at a price. The crime rate is awful, its hardly safe to walk anywhere after sunset, and this is made worse by the location of the student accomodation in one of the poorest areas. It is not helped by the pretty dire town-uni relationship either.

students at this Uni are often led into a misconception that just because there are so many of them, they must be at the right place. Safety in numbers and all that. they could not be more wrong.

Few reasons why people might not want to come to Manchester.

- Bars? Compare miserably to London. All hype with bouncers who all look like excons (although are probably just ex army)
- Feels as if you're taking life in hands as walking home. Especially with Moss Side and Rusholme right next to campus. These areas are renowned throughout Britain for crime. Thought North Manchester was better until a violinist was stabbed on a quiet Sunday morning for no reason.
- Halls of residence. Best Owens park 1960s crap. Cold and cheerless. Noise awful from common room if your room is adjacent to it. Of course we're all going to expect a bit of noise in a place full of first year students but we should be able to go to sleep at 4 am. Lambert Hall - very expensive as ensuite but size of prison cell.
Whitworth park - atrocious. Beware bed bugs but don't expect any help from student services who may even suggest you brought them in yourself. In fact they don't really help with anything.

Manc hester city centre. Bearable for a week. At first I kept thinking I must have missed something but it really is only Piccadilly Gardens, the Arndale and a few criss crossy streets behind. Arndale gets boring, you'll have to go out of town to the Trafford if you want any decent shops. Full of no hopers during the day and rather miserable looking characters.

Student societies. Non-starters. Nothing ever seems to happen past a tedious drink in the pub. Only the founders of the society seem to speak to each other.

Student Bars such as "Grovel" and "Bop" -> Bop's a better scene than Grovel. Bop is packed on Friday as every week has a new theme, for example "nuns and terrorists" or "outer space" or "life in a zoo". It's good on Fresher's week, when everyone talks to each other, but once everyone's formed their cliques then it's dead. Lots of pushing and shoving at bar. Of course drinks are all cheap which is a plus.

Fallowfi eld - lots of fast food joints. Curry Mile obviously good if you want to eat curry all the time but very rough area. Closes down when it's Eid.

Girls all look the same - the wannabe model type. If you don't fit in to this category it's not easy to have fun.

In short. Don't believe the hype.

Couldn't agree more (although we seem to be in a minority for some reason!) I want this year of my life back!

I think this is a brilliantly accurate portrayel of life in Manchester. Its a dump and thats all that needs to be said.
