Advantages: a very central location

Disadvantages: some people may not like a city campus

Where to start! I applied for Portsmouth uni mainly as i wanted to be in that sort of area (southampton/portsmouth) and whoever you ask they will have very strong opinions to share with you about each one, if they are from portsmouth then southampton will be seen as a hole, if your from southampton portsmouth will be a hole, so to avoid this you would really need to go see them both places and pick for yourself then chose your 'side' cos you cant be in the middle as they are great rivals!

The university is impressive, the buildings are spread around the city so its not a campus uni, this may not suit some people however it suits alot of people as everythings on your doorstep, everything is within a ten minute walk or less.

The student union has been recently re build and refurbished and is impressive, it includes a nightclub, 2 bars, a retaurant/cafe and a bookshop, great for socialising and cheap drinks, people do tend to go elsewhere once the year gets started tho.

The library has also been rebuilt and has its own cfe/restaurant, loads of computers and books ect. you'll spend quite alot of time here especially when your deadline is apporoaching, which is handy as its open late.

THe accomadation is spread across the city also, there are the 'guildhall halls' which are based in the city centre, again everything on your doorstep and there are 6 of these, all self catering, and 3 of them very recently built so modern furnishings ect. alot of the rooms are also en suite. There are 2 halls (rees/burrel) which have a sea side location and about 15 mins walk, these are both catered, and then there is the langstone campus which is a fair way out but has its own bar and restaurant and there is a free university bus service which continues throughout the day untill midnight which is free for student use. THese halls are a mix o catered, part catered, and self catering.

My first enocunter with the staff here left me with a bad impression i emailed for help as i wouldnt be able to make the open day as my parents live abroad and i couldnt get down there, and asked if i could come and visit on my own at another date, i percieved the reply rude as it was as tho he hadnt even read my email as he just gave me the dates of the open day and said this was wen i had to go hey had alot of people want ing to visit and couldnt give each person a special tour.. since then tho every encounter ive had has been nothing but helpful and friendly so maybe he was having an off day!

Oh (also nearly forgot) THe nightlife is great, and likewise there is quite alot of good shopping, theres the main high street (comercial road) which also has an indoor shopping centre, and of course theres gunwarf keys, they are the main ones, but there are other smaller places.

Summary: have a look yoursef or visit their websibe

Timbo gives some good advice although I wouldn't necessarily follow all of it. The main thing is that Dooyoo is designed to provide insight and opinions on places and things which youhave experienced. It sounds as though your experience of Portsmouth Uni is limited to the prospectus and an email exchange about an open day. This isn't an awful lot of use to a prospective student who will have read the prospectus.

Welcome to Dooyoo. Looking at the piece, please allow me to give some friendly advice. Fisrt off all there are a number of typo's in this. Would recommend that when writing a review that you write it in Word, so that you have some idea of structure and content, as well being able to correct any spelling isuses as well and copy over to the site as necessary. Secondly, you need to put all the detail you can, such as what courses, where abouts the buildings are, how many people, a bit of history would also be good as well. Also look around at other peoples reviews of the same subject as well as this will give you some idea of things to include, and finally 150 words is really nothing more than a text message, you should be aiming between 900 and 1500 words to make the piece meningful and interesting. That is only two sides of typing, which really isnt that much at all. Hope this helps. Tim

Some useful details here, but could you give some information on courses, standard of teaching, etc?
