Advantages: Near Manchester.
Disadvantages: Educationally rubbish
People might grumble about the area of Salford: it's very ugly. Educational standards are obviously the most important thing, and are poor.
Now in the final year of my psychology/sociology joint honours BSc, I have been dismayed by the standard of teaching and knowledge imparted through out. The psychology department is just rubbish. I am hugely disappointed at how vague, outdated or inaccurate the teaching has been. As I understand it, the Open University introduction to Psychology seems much better than 3 years here :-(
Sociology has some engaging lecturers and provides a reasonable overview of the subject. However they struggle to find ways to get us to think seriously about any of the method or theory covered, and it is college, not uni, standard. Two stars instead of one in recognition of the supportive, engaging academics in the sociology department. But read a good textbook and save £10K
The workload is designed to accomodate part-timers, even on these full time degrees. This has advantages for many students, but our learning suffers.
Socially I have also been unable to meet anyone cool or interesting, and class discussions are dire.
Beware - it might pretend it's a university, but it's just a bumped up college.
Summary: more like a college than a university
