University of Southampton in general

Newest Review: ... campus. There is also a campus located close to the city centre called New College which the University is in the process of closing, this deals principally with adult learning. All these campuses are linked through the University?s own bus service (UniLink). All first years receive a years free bus pass for this service. Iam going to base this review principally around the Highfield campus and the Avenue campus the only two campuses I have personal experience of. The University moved to the Highfield campus from a city centre location in the early 1950's, which coincided with it gaining its University charter. Consequently the High... more

Premium Review University of Southampton in general: Possibly the best University in Hampshire? (1919 words)

When people think of Southampton as a city what they probably think is that its on the coast (not quite true as its the solent), its a major cruise port, its got a premier league football club and its near to the New Forest. All of the above are true but very few people will say when asked that it has one of the best Universities in the country, a member of the prestigious Russell group. I came to Southampton as a fresh faced undergraduate in 1997 not sure what to expect. I've been here 7 years now and before leaving this year it seemed like time to write a review of the University. Southampton itself is a thriving and vibrant student city with a student ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Studying English (288 words)

Having studied English at the University of Southampton for three years I can fully recommend it to anyone who is self motivated. The opportunities are there for anyone who pushes themselves forward and takes them. The course structure is left very much to the individual to determine, meaning you can focus on film studies or philosophy or medieval lioterature as long as you balance that with other subjects. Although this is not in any way a vocational course it will stand you in good stead for a variety of careers. If, like I was, you are not completely sure of what you want to do after university, this course lets you explore along the way and leave with an ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review University of Southampton in general: New sports and union facilities (331 words)

With years of complaints and campaigning, ever since I first stepped into the university in 1996, finally the students here can expect to see a new sports complex. This will be scheduled to complete in 2003, which by the time I almost certainly will have left. It's a bit unfair to us the current generation of students who have to pay for the fees and yet have no chance to enjoy the facilities. Anyway, the new sports complex has a 8-court badminton/ 2 basketball sports hall and 8-lane 25m swimming pool (finally). Together with an enlarged gym, this wil make the sports facilities here up to date with the more than doubled student numbers over the past decade. ...  Read the complete review

I have been at this uni for two years now, going on for my third and have been lucky enoguh to go to the new college campus, that is where the so called rejects go, you know the sports students and the art students. but first let me explain something to you all....the sports students only get one campus at the university and this campus is soon to be solely for sports students. the arts campus used to be in winchester, about 20 minutes down the road, but this has now been added to this campus, resulting in the campus itself being renovated and all the buildings being renwed and rebuilt, making the university itslef an much nicer place to go. the library at new college is ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review University of Southampton in general: Southampton Uni (124 words)
by - written on 04/04/01 (Somewhat useful, 243 readings)

Southampton has spent lots of money ensuring all facilities are of top quality. Halls of residence are comfortable and look very good (unlike others I have seen). IT facilities are adequate and the student union is one of the best I have seen( there are many floors containing everything the average student could need). However, a lack of sporting facilities is the only thing which is detremental to Southampton. However, I would still recommend this place and it is especially renound for its oceanography department, which is especially situated on the coast away from the main university. It's out-of-town location also doesn't appeal to me. However ...  Read the complete review
