Advantages: Improvement over the years, new facilities
Disadvantages: The new students are those of will enjoy them!
With years of complaints and campaigning, ever since I first stepped into the university in 1996, finally the students here can expect to see a new sports complex. This will be scheduled to complete in 2003, which by the time I almost certainly will have left. It's a bit unfair to us the current generation of students who have to pay for the fees and yet have no chance to enjoy the facilities. Anyway, the new sports complex has a 8-court badminton/ 2 basketball sports hall and 8-lane 25m swimming pool (finally). Together with an enlarged gym, this wil make the sports facilities here up to date with the more than doubled student numbers over the past decade. The complex is just next to the Students' Union building in the main Highfield campus, which itself is currently undergoing a major facelift and upgrade. There will be a cinema which can be converted to a dance hall when needed. Additional bars will also be added. What I can say is that with the university improving over the years, the next generation of students are the one that can truely benefit from them. Update: 29/4/02 The plan to extend the Hartley Library in Highfield campus is set to go ahead just after the summer exam in June. The new building work is set to continue for a year until next June. Once the new building is completed, the current building will have some internal upgrade and renovation throughout next summer vacation. All in all, when everything has finished, the total area of the library will be increased by 1/3, apart from having a modern facelift! Also, the university has just announced the new plan for the New College (a former teching college aqquired by the university near the city centre few years ago). The current activities/courses in New College will be transfered and integrated within the Highfield campus. Details plan are to be announced.

- 14/08/02 "With the university doing well in the recent Research Accessment Excercise (RAE), and improved performance in the league table, the university should be in a healthy financial situation for the years to come."
The university has just announced that it expects to end the next couple of years in the red. The REA was a fab result but HEFCE (the people who pay the full whack for all the students fees) have got a bit shirty with Soton this year for underrecruiting last year so we wont be getting as much cash as we hoped.
Luckily the compus improvements will be contintuing regardless (University Rd is looking particularly nice at the moment with all of its nice new trees and footpaths and I hear that they are intending to provide footpaths all along the road set back like the one in front of the nurses building and cycle lanes and raised crossing platforms etc etc...sounds lovely).
The Universities new VC has a vision of us being in the top 10 in the country by 2010 and I think the extra expenditure is to go someway towards achieving this...and I think it will.
I know Soton is a great uni we just need to tell the rest of the country. |

- 24/03/02 *Grumble grumble* not convinced - us dancers need a proper floor! I know there's this big goal of integrating New College with the rest of the University but it's just too bloody far away! Can't see two hundred newbie ballroom-dancers trooping down there for their classes on Monday nights... |

- 21/03/02 With the university doing well in the recent Research Accessment Excercise (RAE), and improved performance in the league table, the university should be in a healthy financial situation for the years to come.
With that, other new developement is also in the pipeline including the expension and upgrading of the library. The Highfield campus is also undergoing a major facelift this year in preparation for the Golden Jubilee Celebration in 29 April.
As for the dance studio: quote from the Student Unions'"
The ballroom is due to be used as a bar catering
facility within the refurbishment of the whole building.
Alternative space is being looked at for dancing and other clubs. There is space at New College that can be used and other areas are being allocated within the new scheme.
At present nothing has been finalized but this part of the project is recognized as something that needs to go ahead under the new scheme. More details will be given once we know the full picture.
